Speaking of Depeche Mode & Culture Club, wempathy, did you ever have any interaction with the lads from Basildon? Didn’t you open for them a few times?
We opened for them in '82 at the New Music Seminar in NYC. We were both staying at the Iroquois on 44th and rode together in a large van to soundcheck…except for Gahan, who let one of the roadies soundcheck for him. I remember our tuner was broke so their crew was gracious enough to tune our equipment for us. They had a really enthusiastic roadcrew, but the bandmembers themselves were kinda quiet. We did talk with them a little about using tapes on stage, we weren’t doing it yet and DM actually had the machine right up on stage with them…like it was part of the band. They were probably one of the more reserved bands we played with at the time.
