Prince has died.

fuckin crazy messed up.
This year has been exceptionally tough on celebrities from my childhood who i’d assumed would be alive forever.
Very unexpected, this one.
I mean, other than being about 47 pounds soaking wet, I thought the guy lived a clean and healthy lifestyle and I’d not heard of any health troubles in the past.
I was never a rabid fan or follower of his career, but . . . come on, it’s PRINCE!!! Everyone knows this guy. He’s massively huge. MJ, Madonna, Prince . . . I think that’s kind of the big three of pop music, right?
Much respect to the man and his career/ legacy and much sympathy to his friends, family, and fans.
Remember he was a Jehovah’s Witness and those are the ones who don’t take medicine and such.
Edit:
I’ve been corrected by a co-worker. They only refuse certain “types” of medical treatments. They can take most medicines.

Yeah, indeed, everyone knows Prince, like you said he was one of the absolute icons of pop. I’d never heard anything about him having poor health before the other day when he was hospitalised.
Even if i can’t say i’m a huge fan of his music, his work ethic and talent are hugely inspirational. As a musician he was incredible, as a writer - incredible, as a dancer and at everything he put his hand to, incredible. A massive talent. Plus he wouldn’t play ball with the record company even though he knew he was fucking his career, hahaha, i admire that about him too. Definitely pretty sad and totally unexpected news, a couple of friends of mine are big fans and really devastated.
Having lived there n Minneapolis for a decade I knew a lot of people who knew him/ worked with him and everything I heard about him was positive. He was creative and passionate and I gdon’t ess he really walked talk and was true to his Witness beliefs and drug free. Real bummer.
My favorite song by him will forever be “Pussy Patrol”.
I’ve always had a big appreciation/admiration for artists who not only served us art, but lived it. I love larger-than-life personalities that keep us guessing and seem to exist in their own fabricated realities. Prince wasn’t discussed just because of his music. He was part of the global dialogue because he was a living mystery. He was private and enigmatic, but when he chose to do something public . . . it was often quite epic. He even changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol at one point. How awesome was that? Many of the newspapers and magazines of the time literally had to create a special key to type that funny “glyph” thing. And others desperately used a workaround and referred to him as “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince”. It was excellent. Homeboy didn’t just redefine music. He redefined reality. And for that, I love him.
What the hell?! My slogan for 2015 was that it could “fukk off with the deaths already,” though 2016 has just upped the ante.
Quite a sobering fact to realize as I celebrate a birthday today…a reminder that absolutely nobody is immortal, even stone-cold legends with millions of dollars at their disposal.
I didn’t pay much attention to Prince’s 21st century career, but he was always a total original in a world where people keep prattling on that “everything’s been done,” and wrote some of the hands-down most entertaining pop music ever.
And if ever you’re in need of cheering up, listen to his guest vocal on the deathless Vanity 6 diss track “If A Girl Calls…Don’t Hang Up.” It immediately gets me laughing even in the worst of moods.
Rest in (Purple) Peace.

Spot-on synopsis - lots of people have the ability to be good artists, but the true geniuses are those who constantly blur the boundaries between the actions of their daily lives and the art they make for public consumption.
A friend in Austria once told me that Prince demanded his Vienna hotel suite be repainted in purple before he agreed to stay there. Even if it’s not true, you kind of want it to be, and the guy’s creative life has been lived on his own terms to the point where that kind of thing is plausible.

There’s a YouTube video somewhere of Kevin Smith (“Clerks” director) giving a monologue about the time that he had the chance to work with Prince on some movie idea that Prince had in his head. And Prince’s assistant/manager guy had to explain to Kevin that he was now “living in Prince’s world” which was a world that, if said assistant got a call at 4 in the morning from Prince saying “I need a giraffe!” he wasn’t to question it, but figure out how to get Prince his giraffe.

Here it is;
Thats on an evening with kevin smith
This is sad news, I’ve been a fan since I was a kid.
I forgot about this, Charlie Murphy talking about being invited (with his brother Eddie) back to Paisley Park to play basketball against Prince and The Revolution or whoever his band was at this time. This is really funny [:)]
Sad news, what a fucked up year for musician’s deaths. I can’t remember so many notable musicians dying in such a short window, it’s really surreal. His protege, Vanity (of Vanity 6 fame) just died in Feb at the same age. I think years of drug abuse caught up with her. I suspect something odd from Prince’s autopsy report when it’s released. Hard to believe the flu killed him, but I guess it’s possible.
He was a part of my childhood, but sort of at ‘arm’s length’. I never bought a single record of his, but liked the videos and singles he released for most of the '80s. Didn’t care much for the New Power Generation or anything after high school. I was 13 when Purple Rain took over MTV and radio. I watched the Purple Rain movie, but the best part of that was Apollonia’s big titties. By the time “Kiss” came out, I was in full Wax Trax/industrial mode.
I’m still mostly bummed about David Bowie, and Glenn Frey’s death was pretty surprising (I’ll always be a sucker for “You Belong To The City”, but then I’m a huge Miami Vice fag).

More appropriate to this forum (perhaps), one of the guys from Negativland died yesterday too.
And Chyna!
I’m getting a kick out of people losing their minds over so many obviously fake Justin Bieber tweets/ Instagram posts claiming that he’s the new Prince now that Prince is dead along with other crazy statements. Pure gold.
It’s also fascinating to see how many people are upset that Kanye West is NOT dead.
