Primal Scream's XTRMNTR

Hey, what’s up, long time no see.

Anyway, the other day I came to the conclusion that Primal Scream’s XTRMNTR is an album Ministry should have made.

It’s super-heavy and industrial without reverting into tired metal, has mass appeal and is politically charged. It sounds like an update to “The Land of Rape and Honey” and think how much more awesome it would be with Al instead of that retard Bobby Gillespie.

Just an idle thought, that’s all.

I fucking love primal scream- one of my top 3 bands ever I’d say. I wouldn’t consider Bobby a retard, he’s a cool dude. the title track for that album and Rise off of Evil Heat are very well written political tracks.
rise:
A life of work, is a life of crime
You pay your taxes, you serve your time
All that money, where does it go?
Schools, prisons, hospitals, roads
Government funding of military science
Genetically engineered ultraviolent
DNA, killer genes
To program microchips, marines
See stealth bombers and tomahawks
On CNN, pay-per-view war

RISE, RISE
RISE, RISE

Hey wage slave where’s your profit share?
They got ya down they’re gonna keep you there
Freeze your mind, metamorphose
Cocaine karma in the heroin zone
Multinational life is cheap
Soldiers, workers, maggots meat
Get on up, protest riot
Are you collateral damage or a legitimate target?

RISE, RISE
RISE, RISE

as for the “album ministry should have made” …perhaps so. Al wouldn’t be able to do (or want to do) Keep Your Dreams or 5 years ahead of my time for instance, but yeah, Accelerator is great- rock/punk at it’s finest in an MC5 meets ATR type of way

Is this the same Primal Scream that was churning out hippie-rock like “Free” in the early 1990’s? Super heavy and industrial? Have they completely changed course?

For some strange reason I hear a lot of similarities between the style Primal Scream has on XTRMNTR and the music that Damage Manual made. Anyone else see a similarity there?

As for albums that “Ministry should have made”, XTRMNTR isnt the only one that comes to mind. I always thought Therapy?'s “Suicide Pact, You First” was the superior version of the style that Ministry tried to achieve with Filth Pig, Darkside and Animositisomina…

yes, they started out as a love/byrds type sound…went to stooges/mc5 rock on the 2nd album, then screamadelica, the combination of electronics/rock/other styles, then their rolling stones sounding album, lots of ballads. then their all out electronic trippy dub stuff, then xtrmntr, then evil heat which is also very electronic mixed with loud rock at times, and a new album on the horizon which is straight up cramps/new york dolls sounding stuff

primal scream started out in 82 as a noise group!

Kind of. I used to own their first ever single, ‘Velocity Girl’. Was a mad Scream fan many years ago. First time I took E was at a party where Screamadelica was playing non- stop. Wild night.

They kinda lost it after that though. ‘Give Out…’ was an embarrassment. I saw them at the Big Day Out (the one that Ministry headlined) back in 94 and they fucking sucked. The albums after that are all OK I suppose. Xtmtr probably the best of an average bunch. Evil Heat had it moments too.

Don’t know whatever happened to them. It’s been ages since their last album.

yep, I’ve got all falls down (their first single on creation from 85) but they had a tape out in 83, which is just non-existant at this point, which was reallly noisy. completly different from their first official releases. yeah, give up isn’t so great. vanishing point is quite cool at 2.am

Interesting to hear someone else voice what I’ve thought for a while. I think Evil Heat goes even further, sounding like the best record that Wax Trax! crica 2002 should have released, if they hadn’t turned to crap a decade prior.

has anyone seen the video for “some velvet morning” ? I like the video version better than the album version, the vid is cool, kinda trippy. it’s up on youtube

I just see that he’s got all these awesome people like Andrew Weatherall, Mani and Kevin Shields working with him on these awesome tracks and then often he goes and fucks it all up with his lazy lyrics. “Evil Heat” (the song) and “Autobahn 66” are good examples of this, IMHO.

I’ll have to check it out… even though I know I’m not supposed to, I really like the song.

haven’t heard this yet but is it a cover the Nancy Sinatra song? I always liked Slowdive’s version.

yep, it’s a cover of Nancy alright- although the lyrics are much more cut down in this version

Yep with Kate Moss on vocals.

Screamadelica, Vanishing Point and XTRMNTR are all well worth owning.

There’s an MP3 floating around on soulseek of Rise when the song was called ‘Bomb The Pentagon’ shortly before 9/11. Very good stuff.
Kevin Shields should have a go producing Ministry, at least the drums would be properly mixed.

Erm, yeah, “Evil Heat” (song) should of course read “Miss Lucifer”, I don’t know what the fuck I was thinking.

Just now checking this out…pretty good so far, though I am surprised. I was also under the impression they were some kind of stupid hippie-ish rock band (kinda like the second song), but this is actually listenable.

love this release. It’s the only cd I have of them though.

“accelerator” reminds me of mc5 meets alec empire from ATR! fun stuff.

I’d recommend going for Evil Heat next or Vanishing Point, which, imo, is a more mature sounding album, if that’s the right way to decribe it. Trippy and dubby, that’s for sure.
