Anyone here into power metal? DragonForce? Gloryhammer? Wizard? Alestorm?
Does Manowar count as Power Metal? I like them. And I like Dream Evil. But most of that power metal stuff is tragically gay.
Was Gus G in Dream Evil? As they would say in Wayne’s World, “That guy can wail!”
Yes, Manowar is power metal. One of the first!
Death Angel=Thrash
Queer Bait is correct. Death Angel isn’t even remotely power metal.
Yes, Gus G was in Dream Evil and has run the circuit with a lot of bands before landing a spot in Ozzy Osbourne’s band (I couldn’t tell Ya if he still is or not). Yeah, he’s a great player.
You can tell me what does and doesn’t qualify for the genre, but I like what little I’ve heard of Blind Guardian, and I do have a couple CD’s somewhere of Iced Earth who I think are great.
There’s just so much faggy ass nerd stuff in the scene, though, and people don’t seem to have enough self-awareness of just how ridiculous they look. Rhapsody, Hammerfall, etc. . . . Any time a song starts with some asshole reading a 10 minute story about elves or King Arthur or some crap you can count me out.
Dragonforce – I can appreciate the difficulty of what they’re playing, but I just don’t feel any soul or passion. It just comes across to me like a bunch of wankers at a high school talent show all excited to show off their fast licks.
And how about YNGWIE? I don’t ever see him discussed regarding Power Metal, but in terms of both musicianship AND thematical material it seems like they SHOULD all be grovelling at his feet.
I like YNGWIE too, by the way.
CIRITH UNGOL!!!

I haven’t heard any Yngwie, but I hear good things. And I agree about the elves and shit. I like it, but I guess it’s a matter of personal taste. (I grew up a Dungeon Master, ya see.)
CIRITH UNGOL!!!
AMON AMARTH!!!
Anyone reading this thread with no interest in metal might scratch their head and say, “Shaka when the walls fell down?” (If you get that joke, you get a gold star!)
CIRITH UNGOL!!!
I didn’t know they were ever considered power metal. They predate pretty much everything discussed so far. And they’re friggin’ AWESOME!!!

They have elements of early doom but also some power metal tendencies…they are a bad ass band indeed…
I don’t know if they are power metal or black metal or what, but I think the gayest most terrible band ever is BAL SAGOTH.
As for YNGWIE MALMSTEEN – listen to the album “Marching Out” and then decide if you are a fan or a sissy.
Hahahahah…BALL SACKETH…
Malmsteen rules…I have told my story several times here about doing work for him(he lives down here)…going to his house changed everything…I still see him on occasion driving one of his many red Ferrari’s around…shirt open, chains around his neck and hair blowing in the wind…yes, just how you would envision him…glorious…
AMON AMARTH
I like them.
I’m about to write one of the gayest sentences I’ve ever written, but . . . I thought they were VIKING METAL.
Anyway, they’re cool. I do get kind of fed up with all the silly ancient unpronounceable cryptic metal band names. Oh look! Borknagar and Bal Sagoth are opening for Amon Duul and Naglfar tonight! Lame.

I’ve heard of all of those except for Naglfar. Is he related to the King of All Music, the legendary Mortiis?

Don’t be so hard on yourself,Gunnar…you have written much gayer sentences…
True. Thanks, Man!
Cry of the black birds got me into amon amarth. Awesome song. I love that melody that runs through the whole song. Epic
Speaking as someone who has pretty much memorized the JRR Tolkien bibliography and has an abiding interest in ancient folklore / mythology, I should be into power metal, but it’s one genre I’ve just never been able to tackle. I tend to listen to music genres more for sonic impact than for the themes that they’re dressed up in, so black and doom metal do more for me than, say, Blind Guardian or Manowar (as different as those two are in execution.)
Now, I do have a certain admiration for Manowar’s projecting their “WIMPS AND POSERS LEAVE THE HALL” ethos for so long, that they actually believe it themselves. Compared to the ridiculous over-the-top pronouncements they make (they recently announced plans to tour for a NINTH anniversary of some album or other lolol), it’s funny that people see Spinal Tap as a parody rather than a faithful copy of real-life metal silliness.
