Like I have stated before I am not all that familiar with Black Metal, but I did read about the whole Euronymous/Varg episode a decade ago in Lords Of Chaos by onetime Boyd Rice disciple Michael Moynihan. It was a fascinating read with a lot of interviews, and background info on various bands, and the controversies with the church burnings, murders, ect. I highly recommend it to anyone curious about the mindset of some of these individuals.
One thing that strikes me about many of these guys is how callous they are, or simply uncaring even if one of their bandmates dies. When ‘Dead’ one of the original vocalists of Mayhem committed suicide Euronymous’ first action was to get a camera and take pictures then to call the police.
You could buy a cd from the most innocuous bubblegum pop artist around and unknowingly contribute to their love of child pornography or dog fighting. You just know where your money is going.
Right and that would suck, but if you still buy that band KNOWING that it funds their child pornography or dog fighting… I can’t personally do that. It’s one thing to not knowingly fund it. It’s quite another to know and continue to fund it.
When you donate to charity can you be sure that 100% of those funds are going directly to the desired target? No you can’t. So then…what are you going to do? Never buy anything from anyone?? See where I’m going with this?
Not really the same thing, you donate to the red cross expecting them to donate to disaster A because they said they were gonna donate to disaster A and then you find out later they did no such thing, It’s not anything you can control, until it comes to donating $ to them again, which probably won’t happen I’ll pick another charity with a better rep.
Trying to equate Varg as a charity doesn’t really work because Varg comes right out and says “I’m the church burning charity.” Not gonna support that. If it turns out that he really is sending that money towards saving puppies they I may reconsider but seeing as how church burning is big in Norway I don’t think that’s happening.
If you don’t want to buy into Burzum - whether it be his art or politics or whatever, then don’t.

No control over their thoughts but I do control how much money they get from me and that’s enough control as far as I’m concerned. Also their thoughts can’t be that “private” if I’ve heard enough from said artist on how misguided his social politics are.
As far as I know, Varg doesn’t fly the flag for anything. He has his views on society, just like everybody else. Some of his views may annoy you. Some of them annoy me. Am I funding his views by buying his music? Not intentionally.
