PHILIP ANSELMO news

DOWN/ex-PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo recently spoke to MTV.com about his new label, Housecore Records, which will launch with an EP by ARSON ANTHEM, a group that features Anselmo on guitar, EYEHATEGOD singer Mike Williams, bassist Collin Yeo and SUPERJOINT RITUAL bassist Hank Williams III on drums. The group formed after Williams, who lost everything he owned in Hurricane Katrina, moved into Anselmo’s spare apartment. They spent hours listening to Anselmo’s extensive collection of early hardcore, and before long, they started jamming.

“Obviously Mike and I have a history, from high school, to touring together with EYEHATEGOD opening for PANTERA,” Anselmo told MTV.com. “After Hurricane Katrina, I bailed him out of jail and put him up at Nodferatu’s Lair [a space on Anselmo’s property]. His apartment and everything he owned burned down in the post-Katrina riots. We always wanted to start a hardcore band. III and I were in SUPERJOINT RITUAL together, but I knew he was a drummer from when I first met him when he was in his teens. … Collin was a young musician, he was in town at the right time, and it all fit perfectly.”
Other Housecore releases will follow, including one by Anselmo’s Christ Inversion, an Eyehategod live album recorded at CBGB and the soundtrack to the Jim Van Bebber movie “The Manson Family,” which was released in 2004. “There’s a lot more to come from Housecore Records,” Anselmo added. “Always remember this is not just a ‘metal’ or ‘heavy’ label. The roster is very diverse in musical styles and tastes.” …

Saw Eyehategod in 96 when they opened for Pantera in Dayton on the Great Southern Trendkill tour.

That must have been kick ass.

I saw Pantera when the opened for Skid Row. Talk about blowing away the main act. Saw them with Zombie too as I recall.
I know that Crowbar, Type O Negative, Sacred Reich, Coal Chamber, and Anthrax have opened for them at the shows that I saw. They had their moments.

I’m pretty sure they played with Suicidal Tendencies at one point too. Too bad I missed that.

I never got what the big deal about Pantera was, considering they were basically an amalgam of things that other bands have already patented before them (most notably Prong, Helmet and Exhorder). Their guitar player had a few good solos, I suppose, but thats about all the good I can think about this band. Anselmo is an example of an enormous talent hidden in the body of a redneck idiot. I think he actually managed to rip his vocal chords to the point that he is unable to sing ‘clean’ anymore. Way to go, Mr. Anselmo!

While I wasn’t into them, I did see them in concert (my first show in the US - I think Neurosis opened) and they left quite an impression. They played a really good energetic set - the way a metal act should be. I do like their Sabbath cover.

i’ve never been a pantera fan myself. always thought of them as a re-hash of things that had already been done.

I agree - they aren’t unique in any way and felt they were too overrated. Same with a lot of metal acts.

Interesting to see Hank (Shelton) on drums again. He played drums for several bands here in town way back when. My favorite: http://www.myspace.com/buzzkilltennessee

“The Manson Family” soundtrack, eh? Must be some sort of fun fact or milestone in film music - for a score to be released before the movie is even completed (Download, for “Charlie’s Family” - working title) and then to be re-released as a completely different album with different artists.

I saw Pantera live in 96 with White Zombie and the Deftones and Phil stopped the show to pick a fight with a kid in the audience. A few years later I saw them on Ozzfest and he did the same thing, stopped the music so he could fight with an audience member. Even though I remain a Pantera fan, I still think Phil is lame. He comes off as a testosterone driven freak.

I saw Pantera open up for sabbath…although I’m not a big fan, they did kick ass. During the break between songs, you could see band members drinking Whiskey (JD I think) & doing blow.

ha~! hey now! you’re gonna hurt jizzwad’s feelings talking bad about little phil!

i agree. every time i have seen phil in some video or interview something, he always seems like he just wants to get into fights to prove his man-ness. i always thought of dime and vinnie and rex as more laid back guys, but phil had the “small bald white guy” syndrome. (where he has “something to prove” and such.) other than that his vox are alright. too bad.

i’ll still throw on some pantera every now and again though, even though phil is a toolbox.

the riff for i’m broken got me to play guitar. goddamm dimebag is/was the shit.

If there’s one thing we all learned from the death of Dimebag is that making shitty uninspired routine music like Damgeplan will get you killed. Having said that Al should be commended for releasing TLS.

That record is shit. Period.

I wonder if a deranged ex-marine willl jump up on stage during the CUL8TR Tour?

i’m confused, so you only liked pantera for phil’s six pack abs?

Phil has really cleaned up his act these days. It’s refreshing to see such a turn-around. Listen to a live show from the 90s and a recent one. He’s matured quite a bit lately it seems.

I dunno about the old shows, I have yet to pick up any boots from early Pantera (phil) days. I have a superjoint ritual DVD and he comes across like a damn moron. Doesn’t seem any more mature than on the old pantera home videos. Less if anything.
having said that I still enjoy anything the man is in. Still haven’t heard the latest down disc though…

No, I mean REALLY recent as in the past few months. Download a show from the latest Down tour, he is way more down to earth and not so much an egotistical moron lately. I really wish I could’ve saw them in Houston. Dude has brought up his game lately in an inspiring way. I think he might actually be off all the hard drugs now.

Ah ok, cool. I actually wouldn’t mind picking up the new Revolver to see what he has to say. I have the last two he was in.
Still kicking myself I didn’t have the $$ to see Down when they toured here. (stupid DIO)

They’ll probably play there soon. The recent shows I got off dime have been amazing, best down shows I’ve heard. Go see em.

In interviews he sounds odd a bit. His brain is a little damaged perhaps. But he is awesome on stage.

Obviously you haven’t listened to crowbar…BLECH!

Phil was never in Crowbar, although he did produce an album of theirs.
And Crowbar is actually very good.

I swear he sang on an album of theirs but just went to their page and I couldn’t find the cover of of the Album I thought he was on. It was a greenish cover and looked nothing like the covers that are listed on their bio. I went to Wikipedia for Phil and i couldn’t find it. I looked at the His Bio fro producing and the Crowbar album he produced and sang backing vocals Also Does not have the cover…I’m at a loss…

HA HA Found it!!! Apparently they changed the cover. It’s the CD from '93. THe one with the guy tied up on the front.(Standing) now it’s some guy on his knees with his hands tied above his head. I would’ve testified in court that was Anselmo siging…Don’t put me on the witness stand
