Tuesday saw the release of the new Ministry, Tool and Pearl Jam. There are already threads on the former 2 but what about Pearl Jam? Anyone picked it up? I am one of those PJ fans that didn’t really hear much from them after they released Vitalogy, though I have seen them live and recommend it.
The first album was excellent. The second, pretty good. The third was dull and I sold it to my roommate at the time.
That was 11 or 12 years ago and I haven’t given a rat’s ass about Pearljam since then.

That’s exactly how I feel about it! I actually gave the first one a spin a few months ago, along with some Smashing Pumpkins and Rage Against the Machine…I was in a weird mood.

I bought it. Its pretty good. I actually bought it directly from the band. The cool thing about that is the packaging is much better and if you preordered it you also got a 12-31-92 show as a bonus disk. If you buy it in the store, you get a gatefold carboard sleeve, whereas is you buy it from the band, the CD case is actually a hardbound book. Which I though was very cool. The whole thing cost me $19. and I actually got the package in the mail on Friday (even though it was released on that following tuesday). Additionally, they did something else that was cool (if you pre-ordered). In the case your packkage didn’t arrive on tuesday, you could download it to tide you over until your package gets to you.
the music…
its a good solid album, but if your looking for another Vitalogy - don’t bother. it’s a mature Pearl Jam now - BUT, they have gone back to playing striaght Rock and Roll (V-C-V-SOLO-C-OUTRO). Meaning no more yukalali crap. I am dissapointedwith the bonus disk. the show is good and features a very rare performace - however, the quality sucks.
All in all, i recommend it. I too miss the “old stuff”. I think their best albums are Vitalogy and No Code. But, I have always been impressed with how they treat their fans. You benifit from buying directly from them - a bonus disk, and exclusive packaging.
if you wanna check them out… they’re gonna be on Dave Letterman tonight (5/4/06). And they’re going to play a mini show after the taping and broadcast it live on the web. Which actually will start in about 2 hours.
I went over to my neighbour’s house for tea last night and they had it on constant rotation.
I guess I’d have to say…it’s ok. I liked about…maybe half of it. The first listen had me screwing my face up and pleading with them to put something else on, but by the third or fourth listen the tunes began to sink in.
It’s ok but I won’t be buying it.
BTW I put on RGB and it lasted about 10 minutes before I was ordered to ‘turn that shit off!!’
I saw a bit of their new single, it sounded ok. Better than other PJ I have heard before. The only song I’ve really liked of theirs is Do The Evolution, probably in part to the cool video for it.
Yeah, I really dig the Evolution vid…i think because it reminds me of the Gerald Scarfe animation from The Wall. That doesn’t mean that the SONGH is good, though…I’m actually amazed that anyone here likes Pearl Jam. Like I said, Ten was an incredible album when it came out…Vs. was listenable…after that, it all went to shit! I guess I forget that some here are younger than me, but i seriously just can’t forgive that transgression. Pearl Jam sucks ass, and they have sucked ass for more than a DECADE now…whatever, though. I try not to judge, so enjoy your corporate radio “rock” while you can, youngin’s.
Ten is poppy and anthemic. Hasn’t aged that well. Oceans still manages to send a shiver up my spine though…
Vs and Vitalogy are INCREDIBLE. End of discussion. Not corporate at all. Unbelievable songwriting. ‘Indifference’ is one of the saddest songs ever written. For some reason it reminds me of summer evenings during the school holidays when I was a kid, growing up in the country.
Sun setting, mosquitos, chirping, holding hands with some young chick…aaaaaaaahhhhh!!
No Code is decent.
Rest is pathetic. Apart from new album which is a grower…
