I was listening to Gub by Pigface and I noticed that he does vocals on a track or two. Does he sing on any Ministry songs?
‘Useless’ from Filth Pig, ‘Vex and Siolence’ from Dark Side of the Spoon, ‘Stolen’ from Animositisomina all have lead vocals by Barker… there may be more but I cant think of them at the moment.
yes that’s right, only 3 songs.
well, he also sings for his lead into gold project.
also, as ministry, barker did live vox for “hatred” (which is actually “thrill kill kult”, but it’s a shared song, it seems).
also, um, i think maybe it’s he who says “this is actually true stuff folk we can’t write anything this crazy” / “porno for your body, prono for your crotch / family entertainment” but maybe not. dunno.
He also sings ‘Scarecrow’ off Psalm 69: The Way To Succeed and The Way To Suck Eggs.
Although it really depends on how you’d define ‘sing’. If you mean, does he open his mouth and sound comes out, then yes he does.
I’ve had an ongoing debate with a friend as to whether Paul sings “Scarecrow” or not, I’ve listened closely and think it is him, my buddy thinks it’s Al. Does anyone know for sure?
Cheers for the info.
I always thought Scarecrow didn’t sound like Al.
I really don’t think it’s Paul, either. It’s definitely a brain-teaser.
Scarecrow is definitely Al…this was discussed a while back on the old Prongs board. Listening to the song tonight, it could be a dual-vocal mix…maybe. I understand the Paul argument, but most of the vocal tracks sound like Al more than Paul, esp. the chorus (just listen the way “SCARECROW” is delivered…that sounds so much like Jourgensen.)
Paul’s vocals serve better on the Lead Into Gold material. I really like his vocals on “Idiot” and “Snake Oil”…nothing profound, but fitting for the style of music.
Sounds like (in retrospect), that Paul used a lot of Al’s gear for his projects (namely the percussion).
In-fact…listen to “Snake Oil”…lots of percussion sounds vey similar to Over The Shoulder/The Angel.

I wouldn’t be surprised. Age of Reason was recorded around the time of all the other side-projects, and Al and Bill Rieflin were both involved, so it’s a good possibility. That album holds up surprisingly well…
Was just thinking about this…
I really thought Paul did a great job on “Vex & Siolence”…lyrically as well.
“Stolen” was musically interesting but vocally pretty terrible…and “Useless” was forgettable in both departments.
The vocals on “Scarecrow” do sound like Paul to me at times…always wondered about thst one…What’s the official word?
heh. never thought about “scarecrow”. interesting. and the sleeve says “barker: bass, programming, vox”. interesting. if that’s paul, then it will be his overall best song for ministry. hm, i like “useless”. can’t see how, for example, “gameshow” is better than “useless”.
if you ask me, he sounds like he has a fucking lisp. like, not a ‘th’ lisp, a ‘shh’ lisp.
it sounds fucking shit. i can’t take his voice seriously or be intimidated at all by it, such as when he shouts ‘too bad it’s all been stolen’ on stolen toward the end, it sounds like a computer technician at my school having a tantrum or something.
just checked out stolen. i don’t hear any lisp you mention. his voice is “ringy”, yes, but nothing really bad. hm, and that stolen is not a bad track, actually…
though on vex n siolence his “s” sounds way too sharp.
If anyone has ever seen video interviews with him, he’s nasal. Like Sonny Bono. Not that it’s bad, but that’s really how he sounds when he talks.
Funny how people for so long considered him gay due to that, crying out loud…
I think someone here compared his speaking voice with Richard Dreyfuss. I think that’s an apt comparison.
Haha. Yeah. That’s a very dead-on comparison, actually.
Me and bisquitodoom will hopefully get the opportunity to interview him for Prongs this year. He’s a real busy guy, Paul is lately. Talked to afra about it, said he himself hasn’t heard from him in a few months.
Busy doing WHAT?!? Seriously what the fuck is he doing besides producing that shitty industrial rock band or whatever that still seems to think it’s 1996?
I want to hear Barker’s material like maybe some new Pink Anvil or something entirely new ala his “solo record” he was supposedly working on!
i agree with voidhead. although i don’t like pink anvil at all, i’d love to hear something in the vein of filth pig or dark side of the spoon.

He’s been doing a lot more than you think. So much, that, every time Afra brings some project up, Paul says “oh no, I’m doing ____ now, that was a month or so ago” or “that got re-scheduled”.
The new Pink Anvil has already been recorded. It was recorded years ago, at the New Years Eve bash, it’s just yet to make it to the mixing and mastering process.
He’ll pop his head up in time. It’s hard to know anything about Paul seeing as how he doesn’t use the internet.
