MINISTRY Gives Away Stems In Groundbreaking Partnership With TuneCore - Nov. 19, 2010
“Fix - The Ministy Movie”, Gigantic Pictures, and TuneCore are teaming up to provide a TuneCore artist the opportunity to have its song licensed to appear on the companion album to the documentary film “Fix” — a film about life on stage and backstage featuring the band MINISTRY. One artist chosen from TuneCore “Fix” entrants will have its song licensed to appear on the companion album with members of TOOL, SOUNDGARDEN, SKINNY PUPPY and others.

To participate, artists can go to this location, sign up for a free TuneCore account and then download the actual bass and sample stems from the MINISTRY song “Psalm 69” for free. They then create their own original single using these stems, and have TuneCore distribute their song to iTunes. Each distributed song is eligible to be selected.

On January 2, 2011, one TuneCore artist will be editorially selected by Paul Barker (producer, co-writer, engineer, and bass player for MINISTRY) to have its song included on the companion album to the film.

The download package includes:

  • Four bass stems: right and left dry tracks, and right and left distorted tracks, as .wav files.

  • A stem of the vocal samples used in the song as a .wav file.

  • An exclusive trailer for the forthcoming film.

  • A hi-res printable PDF poster for the film.

  • A note from Paul Barker.

All participants in this TuneCore contest who create and upload a track keep all of their rights and receive 100% of the revenue from the sale of their music on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, MOG and other digital music stores. The contest winner will have the opportunity to have their track included on the companion album to the film, and sold via a licensing arrangement with the filmmaker.

For more information on the contest, watch the video below featuring “Fix - The Ministry Movie” director Douglas Freel and clips from the film.

“I have always been a big MINISTRY fan,” stated TuneCore’s Jeff Price. "When I was given the chance to work with the team that made the documentary, I jumped.

"MINISTRY has always been groundbreaking — for both fans and musicians.

"I am really excited to be able to offer original stems from the MINISTRY song ‘Psalm 69’ for artists to use in their own recordings. I’m even more excited that Paul Barker, legendary producer, engineer and bass player, is going to listen to songs from TuneCore artists and pick one to include on an album with members of TOOL, KORN, SOUNDGARDEN and others.

“It’s TuneCore’s job to provide information, education and opportiunity to musicians. I am thrilled to be able to do this around a one-of-a-kind, unique promotion like this!”

“Take these sounds from my hand and create your own faith lift,” added Barker. “Any and all offerings will be accepted. Fanatically non-denominational, all sects, cults, bodies, branches, and orders are welcome. Glitch, hardcore, death, soul, dream, crusty- there are no differences in the eyes of this body. A great song is a great song. I, brothers and sisters, will make judgement upon your offspring.”

“Fix” puts MINISTRY’s outrage, genius and artistry on the table, warts and all, with an shockingly intimate and raw look at the demons artists fight — and create — while attempting to both, reach greatness, and sometimes simply survive…

MINISTRY took the genre of industrial rock and made it mainstream, and along the way their music and take no prisoners lifestyle influenced the leaders of today’s most important rock bands; many of whom are in the film: Trent Reznor of NINE INCH NAILS, Maynard Keenan of TOOL, Jonathan Davis of KORN, and Jello Biafra of the DEAD KENNEDYS, to name a few.

MINISTRY not only made some intense and provacitive music, they made it their own way — and as seen in “Fix”, paid the price for it. Featuring the highly volatile industrial metal showman Alien Jourgenson, “Fix - The Ministry Movie” is both an inspiration and a cautionary tale — of ego and excess on the dark side, but also of a heroic artistic integrity and on the other.

The download is 147 MB - of which 90 MB is a trailer for the movie. There’s four different bass tracks, a sample track, and a letter from Paul Barker:

A fond welcome to all.

As one who may be thrust into the guise of spiritual guide, I encourage anyone and everyone to manifest a furthering of musical ideas developed and handed down many, many years ago. But not too many.

Take these sounds from my hand and create your own faith lift. Any and all offerings will be accepted. Fanatically non-denominational, all sects, cults, bodies, branches, and orders are welcome. Glitch, hardcore, death, soul, dream, crusty- there are no differences in the eyes of this body. A great song is a great song.

I, brothers and sisters, will make judgment upon your offspring.

Those who ascend to the ultimate end will bask in the Glory of the highest achievement awarded here. That is, a song, maybe the winner, maybe another, by you, mixed (insert impenetrable legal mumbo-jumbo outlining the vast list of restrictions) by me within a reasonable amount of time from the completion of this competition.

May God have Mercy on Our Souls.

And good luck! Paul Barker

There’s already two threads about this.

Still pretty cool.

Yeah and it’s doubly cool cuz I’m gonna win and my track will be spoken word detailing my hatred of grmpysmrf for 20 minutes with some chick queefing in the background.

I am pushing boundaries you guys!

THIS FTW

If I was Barker I would just give the spot to Void. I don’t even need to hear it to know it’s going to kick ass!

Rock on, Voidhead!

I’d like to hear the rest of the competition. I came up with an idea of making a jazz version of Psalm 69 but I have no way of completing this. Cmon void. Do me justice and make it jazzy

My understanding is that it’s supposed to be an original song incorporating the samples and bassline provided, not a remix…

I guess it would be a stretch to call it a “remix” since you have to record your own vocals, guitars, drums, synths, etc.

Then you owe me royalties since you admitted I’m your muse. yer welcome. I don’t hate you… [:(]
Late,
grmpysmrf

aww thanks grmpy maybe we can bury the hatchet but beware karmic retribution…

On a more serious note the guidelines of this are typically vague. Barker is way cooler than Al but his whole “we don’t care what our fans want” schtick and complete lack of PR skills is annoying this time around because the contest is vague.

We are creating an original song using “stems” from “Psalm 69”?? But it’s not a remix of “Psalm 69”?? So obviously the “stems” are going to have to be manipulated in some ways so that whatever the end product is does not come off as a remix or cover of the song.

Wish this was more clear is all.

I agree. Like everything involving the Fixed movie so far, it seems a little half-baked.
I’ve already figured out what I’m going to do, and it shouldn’t sound anything like Psalm 69. So there’s that.

It’s been a few years so I might be hazy on a couple of the specifics, but . . . .

Back when “Cover Up” was in its laboratory phase 13th Planet (Angie acted as the liaison) opened up the forum (via the Piss Army) for song suggestions. It was noted that anyone whose suggestions were taken would get thanked in the notes and win a prize.

Everyone started submitting suggestions, but then when the album was being put together we were told that they lost the list of who submitted what (despite us all posting it on the forum as well) and nobody got squat. A couple of my suggestions were used and I know a few others that were from specific “Pissants” at the time.

I think the album gives a thank you to the “Piss Army” but that was it. No free album, no stickers, no names mentioned in the liner notes.

Oh, well. The album was crap anyway. I’m not sure having my name on it would have made me feel all that great (though it might have given me the only reason for not getting rid of it).

Eddie Entropy going to fuck the shit out of those stems and make them his bitch.

Yeah, I submitted the name Lubricatour too but I didn’t get anything haha.

so wait, reznor at least released full multitracks for songs, the .zip files had all the instrument parts.

psalm69 one has only bass (which is still highly interesting to me) and some samples from movies and what not.

that’s like, the best source you can totally remix the song of.

nice.

Maybe Paul’s not authorized to give anybody the other parts.
Besides, I really don’t think remixes are the point. It’s to create an original song using those parts.

Agreed on both points. I think he just gave out the bassline and the samples (which I’m guessing are public domain or something close) so as not to get in a pissing match with Uncle Al or any of the other cats.
