Pale Sketches

Well I’ve had this CD Since Saturday. Upon first listening I absolutely did NOT like the fist track because the vocal track was way to prominent in the mix. But upon further listening I think it is now my favorite track I think for as nasaly as his voice comes off it’s really quite soothing. The rest of the CD pretty much runs together(not in a bad way though) where I can’t really tell where one track ends and another track begins. I like the quietness(subtlety) of the mix levels except where the guitars kick in and are raucus in an unoffesnive manner. Certainly a #2 next to Silver But not as Heavy as an album which makes it easier to listen to on a regular basis. While not as good as Silver it will probably stay in rotation longer than Silver will! Thanks for those that championed Jesu definately one of the better bands I’ve bought over the last several years. The only problem with these 2 CDs is that it really makes Jesu S/T sound like it’s part of Jesu JV squad and really makes me cringe at how bad it is compared to these two albums.

i wouldn’t say S/T is “bad”, but i agree with your JV comment.

glad you’re enjoying it. this record got me into alot of other stuff, like Boards of Canada, etc.

Grumpy - the first track on Pale Sketches doesn’t have any JKB vox- it’s a sample of Tim Curry from Rocky Horror Picture Show ‘Don’t dream it, be it’ which he clipped from the soundtrack right in the film as Curry falls into a pool.

the Self-titled is way more doomish and a bit more Godflesh, then the later releases. I love the S/T but there’s a catch, there was a limited picture disc vinyl version that has a different (and superior) mix of the record. still the songs are the same tho… just better sounding.

Forget Final…you NEED Jesu’s first release “Heart Ache”!!! The song “Ruined” is the greatest thing on the face of the planet. After you have this…then, and only then may you get some Final.

HEART ACHE RULEZ!!!

right…id better hit up some Final then…

Don’t be fuckin with Akbar…his dad’s a badass Taliban fan.

Heart Ache is Jesu’s greatest most DEVASTATINGLY DEVASTATING FUCKIN DEVASTATINGLY BRUTAL BEAUTIFUL DELIGHTFUL SKULL FUCKING CRUSHINGLY BRUTAL RIP-SNORTER OF A HUM-DINGER OF A BOBBY DAZZLER!!!

Don’t buy it at your own peril.

P.S. people that don’t buy it are automatically gay.

Ok. Well that explains the nasaly voice. I’ve never seen Rocky horror picture show. I hear it’s great but only in groups wiht everbody dressed in drag but I’ve never had a fancy for seeing it on home video or in groups. Just seems dumb.
Also there are elements to the song that sound like some of it is backmasked (sounds running in reverse) Anybody else hear that?

I will say that if yer Jesu kick is concrete - def. go buy a copy of Heartache as soon as it pops up on the 'Bay as it is good and out-of-print and kinda hard to find.

Well, my love for all things Jesu certainly isn’t as strong as yours, but I would be ok in picking up Heatache. I still don’t think I’ve heard anything as emotionally powerful as “Star.” Give it some time, I may swear by JKB in due time, But, I’m not commited, just yet, to completing the collection, as far as limited releases and such. My soul doesn’t burn to find the really hard to find ones, the way it does for me to find the last 4 Ministry Boots! (which BTW are “Live at Waldrock '96”, Lollapalooza VOL. II, "The Dark Side Of Live,"and “An Evening With Ministry”

Pitchfork’s got a sorta mediocre review of the new ep up today but their reviews strike me as a little scattershot anyways lately.

I really like Pale Sketches as well, it brings a bit more of Final’s ambient qualities into the music which I dig. I love the looped Tim Curry samples on “Don’t dream it” as well, an excellent track.

I think PF is bitching cuz, it’s a recycle of the vinyl 12" which they reviewed already.

Jesu’s best and stongest imagery will always be the tree from Silver. Simple dramatic effective and moody.

Fo Shizzle, My Bizzle!! Although i think the leaning power line encased in Fog is a better Pic! I wonder if that was real or if he enhanced the pic with some photoshop tools to get that fog as thick as it was…

I’m quite fond of the Pale sketches art as well. It looks like an old roller coaster at some broken down forgotten about theme park. Very sad in that You know that place probably brought Joy to a bunch of people and now all of those people have forgotten about that place. I think an appropriate title to the pics in Pale Sketches would be “neglected Joy” or “Ignored Happiness”

That’s what I thought…until I listened to Sun Down. That trumps everything Jesu ever did.

The artwork for the Jesu/Eluvium vinyl split is very eye-catching, made only better by the yellow-coloured vinyl. Yum yum…thought the s/t artwork just says it all. It’s just…THERE.

Yeah I said it. Bog whoop. Wanna’ fight about it as well?!

[mad]

after all this jesu talk I saw they had a cd at best buy, some 4 track one for like 13… so i passed… a little much for an EP

I’d kill for that Japanese import.

20.00 Bucks!

That original beats version of Silver is really good, I almost dig it more than the album version. It’s got a really nice warm sound to it

I always try to spin the Original Beats version at places and it gets really good reception. I prefer it too

I haven’t heard ‘Pale Sketches’ yet. I enjoyed the s/t and ‘Silver EP’ immensely though.

‘Conqueror’ was unlistenable.

Surpised to see the hate for the s/t here, as it is my favorite release by the band so far.

I have not heard ‘Heart Ache’ yet but I want to get my hands on it.

Has anyone heard ‘Sun Down/Sun Rise’ EP or ‘Lifeline’ EP yet? I haven’t heard anyone commenting on those releases…

Jesu is a bit too prolific for my tastes. Tough to keep track of everything they put out. I like bands to do about 1 album every year or 2. More quality control and less of a pain keeping track.

Well I haven’t taken Pale Sketches out of my Car Cd player since Saturday. So far “Don’t Dream It” and “Supple Hope” (Track 6) are my favorites I specifically like Supple Hope Because It sounds like Darth Vader is on the Keys! with that shukk Chikuuuuuh Sound! I like “Wash It All Away” as well because of that rolling bass line!! Sounds like something Barker would’ve pulled out on FP or DSOTS! I still stand by my ranking of these 3 albums; S/T clearly a sub par offering compared to Silver and Pale Sketches. Silver is easily crowning the 3 I own and Pale Sketches being a Solid Second Place! Sketches is closer to the 1st place album than S/T is to the 2nd place album. S/T is a waay off in the horizon Distant third!

@voidhead - if you like the s/t you’ll like heart ache - it’s more ‘godflesh-y’ then many of the releases otherwise.

Sun Rise/Down was a bit more of longer material, altho I’d say it’s a sorta mix of that longer electronic feel and that conqueror sound - it’s really my least favorite release.

Lifeline (the song) is conqueror-esq, but ‘you wear their masks’ is more electronic side stuff [my fav on this ep], and the jarboe track is good. the last song more like lifeline.

There’s like a few jesu phases sorta so far: doomy/ droney, electronic and guitar popish, and then there’s mixes of all 3.
