Ozzy Osbourne

Had a look through past threads and I don’t think we’ve ever had an Ozzy Osbourne topic.

And everyone has an opinion on Ozzy. Even my pop lovin’ younger sister has her two cents on Ozzy.

What’s yours?

Anyone have any fave Ozzy albums? Could you rank them best to worst?

Anyone hate his solo works? Anyone here NEVER heard an Ozzy album?

Like to hear from you.

I guess I’m a fan, well I do own EVERY album he’s released - but my patience is sorely tested from time to time, now more than ever. Surprisingly though, his new album, ‘Scream’ is seriously killer. His best (and heaviest) in many a year - and I’m the biggest critic when it comes to his later works. Oh and I just try and pretend ‘The Osbournes’ never existed. That helps.

From Best To Worst (studio only):

Blizzard Of Oz
No More Tears
No Rest For The Wicked
Diary Of A Madman
Scream
The Ultimate Sin
Bark At The Moon
Ozzmosis
Down To Earth
Black Rain

Oh and NO referencing Sabbath and comparing the two. That’s too easy.

Perfect timing with an Ozzy thread considering I’ll be at ozzfest this saturday. This will be my third one in 10 years. Friends are telling me Scream is his heaviest in years. Always digged No More Tears and Blizzard. Ultimate Sin is a guilty pleasure and I didn’t think Black Rain was too bad after listening to it a few times. I highly recommend Tribute for anyone. First album of his I ever heard and its a good introduction to his solo stuff imo. Not to mention its Randy Rhoads at his finest

I only have one thing to say thats Sabbath related is that I wish he would stop playing Sabbath songs in his solo sets. I come there to hear Ozzy. If I wanna hear Sabbath I’ll go to a Sabbath show. In fact I’ve seen Sabbath and it was kind of a let down. But anyways I dig the Ozzman. Osbournes season 2 is still some of my favourite tv of all time

For me personally, Ozzy’s entire recording career is a ‘guilty pleasure’. It’s like watching a Nightmare On Elm Street flick and hoeing into a large tub of popcorn.

Total guilty fun.

i do own the holy grail…cd version of the king biscuit flower hour show featuring ozzys 1st tour with randy rhodes, around '81 or '82. have the cue sheets as well.

that tour was promoting ozzys 1st 2 solo albums.

… It’s like watching a Nightmare On Elm Street flick and hoeing into a large tub of popcorn.

Total guilty fun.

Man you’re getting cooler and cooler!!
I saw your list, I own “…Tears” and “Blizzard…”
everything else I’ve heard from Ozzy’s solo has been on the radio, and I’m not really a fan.

I really really like “Good Bye To Romance,” probably my favorite track by Ozzy anything. (Sabbath/radio play) I like “Blizzard…,” excellent album, doesn’t ever get old. But, man, “…Tears” get’s old fast and sounds like a pop album in spots. The “Title Track” is probably the only one that has staying power, “Mama I’m Coming Home” is way over played, and kinda pisses me off.

I also really liked “See You On The Other Side” (don’t know the exact title, probably “The Other Side”) and I liked that song a lot, but one day it was like someone threw a switch, and now I hold the same contempt for it that do for “Mama…”

Kinda On topic, I really like the Lita Ford/ Ozzy Cut “Close my Eyes For Ever” it’s really fucking good! I’ve liked that since it came out. I think I was in 7th grade… Bought the Lita album specifically for it when it came out.

I had this discussion with Peligro some time ago. We both agreed that if you cut through all the cheese (and yes sometimes that is near impossible), there are some mighty fine hidden gems amongst Ozzy’s solo material.

Blizzard is the obvious - not to mention most Sabbath worthy’ - standout but by no means should you write off his entire 80s output. There’s plenty of killer tracks to be found if you look hard enough. Bark At The Moon, Diary Of A Madman and The Ultimate Sin all contain their fair share of filler but are worthy nonetheless – especially Ultimate which, despite its pop metal sheen, contains some of Ozzy’s most downbeat and poignant material to date. The title track and Shot In The Dark are worth the price of admission alone. And as for No Rest For The Wicked, it’s only slightly inferior to its more celebrated follow up. There are some absolute classics there – Miracle Man, Tattooed Dancer, Fire In The Sky and Devil’s Daughter come instantly to mind…although its been a long time since I last heard that album.

And yes, I can hold my head up high and still say I really like Scream.

I’m sure someone must have put an Ozzy album on when I worked at the record store but I have no conscious memory of listening to one. I’m in no rush to change that either.

I have the Sabbath box-set and the Randy Rhodes tribute, and that’s all the Ozzy I need.

Well, I also have the studio versions of Mr. Crowley and Crazy Train on my iPod.

Never really gotten in to Ozzys solo material. Its not that i dislike it. its just that i have never really been exposed to it .

A friend gave me a copy of black rain it kinda sounded like a watered version of BLS. Was probably a bad place to start haha[:P]

I like the hits, plus “Over the Mountain”, but that’s about it.

I’m a huge Ozzy fan. In fact, there are only two bands that I will never miss for any reason whatsoever: Ozzy, or Skinny Puppy.

While not all his stuff is stellar, there are many worthy tracks in his catalog.

I think it stems from the fact that Ozzy was the first concert I ever saw from the front row, and it had a profound effect on my adolescent self. I go absolutely crazy whenever I see him live. I’m not a religious man, but seeing Ozzy is like what a religious experience would feel like. (and no, it’s not the drugs and/or booze)

As for numbering his works:

Blizzard Of Ozz
Diary Of A Madman
The Ultimate Sin
No More Tears
No Rest For The Wicked
Scream
Bark At The Moon
Black Rain
Ozzmosis
Down To Earth

And his work with Sabbath is unbeatable.

Largely uninterested in Ozzy, post-Sabbath. Largely uninterested in Sabbath, post-Ozzy.

Largely.

Yeah, saw Ozzy in California on The Ultimate Sin tour in '86. He was supported by…I kid you not…a very young and enthusiastic band called…Metallica. Don’t remember much of the gig, except for the fact that Metallica seemed really out of place there and that Ozzy closed the show with a 10 minute version of Symptom Of The Universe. I also remember being seated behind two Playboy bunny types wearing matching gold bikini tops and ogling as their tits jiggled up and down while they danced and clapped.

As for Ozzy’s solo material…I own everything up to No More Tears. Love me some Blizzard Of Oz, I think that one’s better than half of what Ozzy recorded with Sabbath. Diary Of A Madman is great, especially the title track and S.A.T.O, and whoever dissed Bark At The Moon obviously hasn’t flipped over and listen to side two or skipped through the first few tracks on the cd player as it contains two or three of his best tracks. Ultimate Sin is half killer and half filler, but No Rest For The Wicked is my absolute favourite. Fire In The Sky, Miracle Man and Tattooed Dancer are insane and if anyone ever laughs at Ozzy as a solo artist (post Blizzard Of Oz) I usually point out these three tracks in particular. No More Tears is…ok but my least favourite.

After NMT, Ozzy became one of the most annoyingly bland metal acts out there. And I think if I really wanted to torture somebody I’d make them listen to his 2001 release, Down To Earth.

The only song I really like off of DTE is The Junkie. I’m actually hoping to hear new stuff at the show this saturday

I also saw Ozzy on the Ultimate Sin tour. For what I can remember…it was awesome. Both put on great shows. Ozzy was pretty fuckin fat then…wearing the white coat outfit & big hair.

As cheesy as it is, I really like The Ultimate Sin. It’s a great album to use as driving music.

his solo career is underrated.

but yeah, he really did “sell his soul for rock n roll”

Ur hella right. Just did that one the way home from the show. Ozzy really suprised me this time around

whats his current setlist approximately at least?
he’s playing here in september, really wanna know what to expect

He actually opened with Bark At The Moon instead of IDK, though IDK was still in the set. He only did one new song and it was the single, which didn’t sound that good live. I mean a chunk of the set was rather predictable but there were quite a few surprises. The first being Road To Nowhere. I cant remember if I heard that the first time I saw him but it was a treat this time around.

There were the usual Sabbath hits of Paranoid and Iron Man but the latter was probably the best live version I’ve ever heard. But the first Sabbath song that got played was very unexpected and that was Fairies Wear Boots! At one point Ozzy left the stage and the rest of the band did a really long version of RAT SALAD that included a guitar solo that blew Zakk Wylde out of the water and a drum solo you never thought would end.

But what really made my night was the fact that two songs from Ultimate Sin got played. Shot In The Dark and fuckin Killer Of Giants! I think Gus G is the reason anything from that album got played. Oh and for all you No Rest fans he played Fire In The Sky. And he didn’t fuckin waste time playin Mama I’m Comin Home either thank god! It was a damn good show overall. There are some other songs I’d still like to hear live but I aint gonna complain about this show
