I made the switch last fall, and can’t believe I waited so long. I bought a Sony WEGA 60" 3-LCD (my previous TV was a lousy 27"), and now I’m in sports/movie heaven. Of course, now the non-HD shows look like shit on our TV, but I figure it’s just a matter of time before every game and new TV show is in HD. Once I upgraded to the HD DVR through COX, I got 15-20 new channels added for free, all in HD of course. I don’t have an HD DVD player, but my regular widescreen DVDs still look great on the big screen.
I’d probably still have my old shitty TV if I didn’t get such a good deal on the Sony, which was a customer return (only paid $1250, was selling for twice that in stores). It’s good to see that prices are finally coming down on HD TVs, now that demand has increased.
Oh, slack, if you ever want to show off the HD to guests, just tune in to Discovery HD or National Geographic. Yeah, not the most exciting TV, but the nature programs seem to display the best HD quality out of anything. When my parents were over on Thanksgiving, I tuned the football game to regular CBS, then switched to CBS HD to show them the difference. They’re now shopping for a new TV!
1002
i dont’ have the cash for an HD set but i do often use my pc monitor for watching movies and such since it’s 16x9 and 1650x1050.
stuff looks awesome in HD, you’ll enjoy it.
well, it arrived.
What a pain in the ass. Although, I must admit - Amazon is on top of it and already has a replacement in route. At the time of the replacement delivery they will pick up the damaged item.
bummer…I have a 42" Plasma EDTV and I love it. Samsung is good…the wait is worth it!
What’s the resolution? 1920 x1080 I hope.

It’s 780p. I couldn’t afford the 1080i just yet - the 1080 version was a cool 800 bucks more. I have a large collection of standard DVDs and I am comfortiable with that resolution.
We’ve had a 36" CRT HDTV for…I guess 2 years now or so and we have yet to ever upgrade our service to make the HD channels available. I’m not sure if we ever will. Maybe when it becomes standard. shrugs
so where’s the replacement slack?
i recently acquired a new hd tv as well, with all the fancy deals going around for consume-mas. it’s just … ridiculous! i feel like a rich asshole, it’s way too luxurious to not make me feel like a pompous jerk, heh.
picked up a 32 inch sony bravia. went for 720 p native, since i wouldn’t notice as big of a difference bewteen 720p and 1080p IMHO on a 32 lcd. ( 1080p is really for monitors 40inch or more IMHO) my living room is tiny, so a 32 in tv is a perfect size.
one of the nicest things i have noticed is it is light as hell, and doesn’t generate nearly as much heat or consume as much electricity as my old ass tv.
on a side note, holy crap are places trying to scam you on hdmi cables! most places have them for like 50-60 bucks, and lowest i found actually in a store was 20 at home depot and office max. newegg has them for like 5.50, though. in theory, since hdmi is an all digital signal, and digital is either on or off ( 0 or 1) then it will either work or not, no in between? no crappy signal, just signal or no signal, right? so it shouldn’t make any difference between 6 dollar hdmi cables and 60 ones eh? (unlike normal analog cables, where shielding can/does make a difference in signal quality)
yea man… the HDMI cables… I actually bought mine through amazon. bought 3 of them for $2.79 each. I tell everyone i know about this. And yes, you are corrrect - they are digital - either it works or it doesn’t.
i bought a plasma becasue i thought the LCDs were just a little too bright. did you get an LCD?
i got an lcd because of the brightness. even after having this tv for a week sometimes bright colors make my eyes bleed !!! i have toned down the white level a bit, but yeah, this is bright as fuck.
another side note: HD content. there is a general lack of hd content unless i have a blu-ray/hd-dvd player. i get some channels from my cable package, but watching old content makes it look horrible!
let’s take the skinny puppy “greater wrong …” dvd. looks fine in SD, but now when i watch it it’s so pixelated and such. the best dvd i have in my current collection, visual wise, is the old “And all tat could have been” nin dvd. it’s two discs, and each one is dual layered because of the multiple angles and all that. it stands up pretty well. too bad i’m not so into nin anymore.
yea - its a little grainy - but still the standard DVDs look great. do this check the settings on your DVD player. There’s a setting in there where you tell it you’re putting out to a 16:9 (HD) or 4:3 (standard). Make sure its set to 16:9, it will be muuuch clearer.
also i’m thinking about really scalling back on my cable channels. i NEVER watch anything that’s not HD. so i’m paying for 300+ channels and i’m only surfing through 35 of them.
