OT - Turntables

Who has a turntable? I just bought one. I haven’t used a turntable since probably 95. I intend to rip some of my records.

I wanted to mention that all these guys that are getting record players and mentioning how great the “album version” is on remixes and reissues. I just wanted to share with you guys (i’m sure you all know this) but once that recording hits a digital environment it has lost it’s analog properties and is pretty much a digital recording of an analog recording. And once something is lost in a recording (or image) along the way - it’s gone.

knowledge is power. cheers.

I have an Audio-Technica that I have had for quite some time…never let me down…

Cool. i did a bit of googling. this one seemed decent. plus i liked the design. i saw your audiotechnicas in the top list too.

i have my old turntable in my attic i used to use. it was my mom’s. it doesn’t keep a solid speed. not sure if its worth a shit because i never spent the time to find out.

@slack funny, going through the same thing. I had a vinyl player in the UK but when coming to the US, moved with just the vinyl. This was years ago. A friend suggested the Audio-Technica as it has bluetooth for a modern setup (but I don’t know if it loses the vinyl “warmness”). Seems that’s a good brand as @queer_bait confirms. It’s the speakers I’d suspect are just as important…

Thanks for the input guys. @afra let me know what you wind up with.

I read a lot of good stuff about the audio technica’s, but I didn’t notice they had bluetooth. @queer_bait did you get the bluetooth one?

I’m not sure how I’m going to use this record player. At first I was thinking I’ll mostly use if for ripping and just connect the turntable to my home studio. however, i may take to this and enjoy and i’ll hook it up to my living room system, not sure so we’ll see.

@slack went with the inexpensive Audio Technica AT-LP60BK-BT Fully Automatic Bluetooth Wireless Belt-Drive Stereo Turntable, Black (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BE5CT8U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It’s < $150, has bluetooth for flexibility but you can also connect real speakers, is not big and bulky and isn’t those cheesy ones with the speakers in them… Good reviews too…

I have the Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB motor-driven turntable. Bought it a couple of years ago, after re-establishing a vinyl collection (new and used) over the past several years. It’s a nice table, and did not come with a stylus, so that was an extra expense (Audio-Technica VMN20EB). I’m using JBL LSR305 (5") studio monitors (with the LSR310 subwoofer), routed through a little Beheringer mixer.

shit, maybe i got the wrong brand! heh.

i went with a minimal design, and maybe bought in a little bit a haste. nonetheless - it’ll be fun firing up this thing and getting out my old ass vinyl.

love the info everybody - keep it coming.

Cmon you better break out that Fat Boys album,son!!!
All You Can Eat!!!

Def ,fresh and ill,kid!!!

Long time Ministry fanatic from Eastern Europe here (seen them 6 or 7 times in various countries over the years, from Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Germany, Austria), even had brief chat with Al like 10 years ago (which was great), and I’m also a turntable manufacturer. So just signed in to give a few hints…

You can see the work of my company here;

But anyway, just to throw few words of advice;

  1. Those turntables above, well, those are toys, not real turntables. Forget about cheap plastic tables, bluetooth, usb option or whatnot. That’s not what the real turntables are meant to be. It’s a waste of hundreds of dollars. If you want a real turntable, look for vintage Denon, Thorens, JVC or brands from the past like that…not bluetooth nonsense and stuff like that.

  2. Do NOT buy new records, specially COLORED ones. They are atrocious. That’s not vinyl quality sound. It’s made for new generations that do not know how the LP should sound. Most of these records are no better then youtube or MP3 sound wise. In short, they are horrible. If you want to a good sound, look for the older, original releases. For example, if you are looking for Ministry Mind Is A Terrible LP, look for the Sire 1989 release, not the ones made in the last couple of years. I have bought in the last few years bunch of Ministry LP’s, like Geatest Hits, Sphinctour, Live Necronomicon etc. and that’s just utter garbage. The sound is beyond terrible. I just bought it because I am a huge fan of the band and a LP collector but other then that, it’s a huge waste of money. So, llook for black records, the older the better.

  3. Forget all of the above said about the turntables. What is most important if you’re planing to get into vinyl seriously, is not the turntable itself, it’s the stylus (cartridge). You can have the most expensive and best turntable in the world, playing best releases, but if you have the cheap stylus mounted on your tonearm, the sound is going to be crap. Stylus makes 90% (if not more) of the sound. So buying a good cartridge is a priority. And that costs. You have to spend at least 300 $ (let say Denon 103, which is a great cartridge for it’s price) if you want to enjoy in your LP’s. Otherwise, you might as well stick to your mp3’s and youtube because it’s all in vain. In short, Audio Technica plus audio techinca stylus is just a bad, bad combination that will lead you nowhere. But if you invest some in a good stylus (at least Ortofon M2), even a toy like Audio Technica entry model can get you at least a decent sound.

I hope I helped a little…

This thread is not about suggesting turntables, it’s about what we own. What you are selling on eBay is clearly ‘boutique’ and on a completely different level than what most casual listeners own. I’m not in the market for a table that costs 3 grand, but congratulations on your high end business model.

Maybe you thought you stumbled onto an audiophile turntable forum, not sure why you would think it’s cool to call our turntables “toys” and then think you “helped a little” somehow. I wouldn’t say your post has helped at all, considering you are just basically insulting what we chose to purchase for our needs. My turntable is great quality for me, I have a nice stylus and good speakers, and my vinyl collection sounds great on it.

Yeah like tenohtwo I’m happy as shit with my set up…been great for me for a long time…happy with my little “toy”…you sound like a straight up snob,dude…

I’m with you,man…I loved all that shit…I wasn’t being facetious…

@Huxley Thanks for the input. Those turntables are higher priced than I’m going to be paying for a turntable. The closest I’m going to get to audiophile gear is my NAD CD player.

First night with the new turntable… I have no idea why you guys use this technology. It’s just so cumbersome. It’s noisy. I’m going to keep at it, but i’m not sure about this.

I’m listening on my JBL powered studio monitors - it doesn’t sound that good.

I’m remembering why I embraced the CD so well back in the day.

I’ve never seen/had a turntable work correctly right out the box, there is set up involved if you’re going to get the most out if it.
Get a stanton, very no nonesense.
