I went to log in to slsk today and it said my version was too old… When I went to download the new one it said I needed to pay. Am I missing something?

Works fine for me. What version were you using? Did you perhaps go to download it from one of the scammer sites? The real one’s www.slsknet.org
you had to have gone somewhere else. Slsk has never and will never ask you to pay. Says so on their website. It’s a freeware program. They just ask for donations which will grant you privelages for a month or so.

I think there is a fake soulseek site out there with spyware on it–so maybe that’s what you ran across? Anyway:

the site I somehow got to was slsk.org , not slsknet.org.
