I’m doing a project for my video class and I need footage of the Devil. I don’t want something cheesy like the Devil in that fantasy film Legend with Tom Cruise (as a teenager). I want something a lot more realistic and disturbing.
Any ideas?
And it can’t be something like The Devil’s Advocate where the Devil just looks like a normal person. I want it to look like God’s supernatural enemy, but look realistic too.
Edit: Preferably not too obscure either because I have to get it relatively soon at either Blockbuster or some other shithole chain store.
Keep an eye out for The Adventures of Mark Twain. It’s a claymation movie in which Mark Twain takes some of his characters for a ride in a hot-air baloon and the flick journeys through some of Twain’s writings.
Aside from it being pretty wild, and a great look at Twain’s work, it has by far, hands down, the best satan I’ve seen in any movie or show. He’s basically faceless, and uses a Mardi Gras kinda mask on a stick to do his speaking.
It’s might be hard to find, but it wouldn’t hurt to look at yer video stores; if by chance you do find it, it’s fantastic.
It’s not specifically Satan, but I’ve always been rather fond of the creature in the Aphex Twin video “Come to Daddy.” Also, I remember a film version of Dante’s Inferno as a kid (I think it was just called “The Inferno”) that had a pretty faithful version of Satan from the text: buried to his waist in ice, with three heads knashing at each other. Pretty fucked up for a six year old…sounds like an interesting project, though.
Not Satan per se, but a devil in Hell, Malebolgia from the Spawn live action movie. Also from the musiv video of Tribute from Tenacious D, Dave Grohl being a cool-looking Satan right thur.
[reply]Try to find Jan Svankmeyer’s “Faust”. There is a pretty disturbing image of Satan there.
Svankmeyer is a legend. Kudos for mentioning. Didn’t he do that nightmarish version of Alice In Wonderland???[/reply]
Aw dude, whats that movie called??? Ive seen a poster for it somewhere online but havent been able to find it. Anyone see that weird Russian live action/stop-motion animation one? Funky shyit.
Svankmajer’s Alice in Wonderland is just called “Alice,” and it puts his Faust to shame.
For a readily available vision of Satan, I thought Peter Stormare was pretty cool in Constantine.

I’ve never heard of Svankmajer before, but it definitely sounds like something twisted that I’d enjoy. I did a quick check and Netflix has Faust, Alice, Little Otik, and a couple of collections of his short films.

That was some excellent casting, he made an awesome Satan. Evil enough to condemn billions of soul through trickery and deviation but nice enough to cure Constantine of lung cancer.
