Was listening to the Lithium station on Satellite radio and they introduced NIN’s ‘Head Like A Hole’ with a story that I have certainly never heard: in brief, they said Trent attended a Ministry show and Al introduced a song as something that would put a hole in your head like a nine inch nail.
I laughed and said out loud, “I’ve never heard that shit.”
Anyone else know this story? They also said that Trent took a video camera and recorded the show.

Richard Patrick was quoted for saying Reznor introduced him to Alejandro’s music at a Revco show & was enthusiastic about sharing his admiration for Jourgensen & Barker’s innovation of sound & what have you. Reznor referred to Al as his idol at the time…so sad they’ve becum estranged from each other.

Haha! I don’t recall hearing/reading that background story/ explanation for the name. That’s pretty cool. Not sure if it’s true . . . but still rad.
I never followed NIN, and I don’t recall if anyone else ever shared this theory or if I just pulled it on speculation, but I always thought it was drawn from biblical reference. The nails that were used to crucify Jesus and nail Him to the cross, I thought, were supposedly NINE inch nails. I don’t recall how I came up with that (possibly random and flimsy) explanation, but I seem to recall hearing a Easter sermon or maybe watching something on the History channel and hearing reference to the usage of NINE INCH NAILS.

Anyway, I am curious now.
That was one of the explanations on their Wikipedia page. But, they didn’t have this Ministry story. I dunno, the way the dude told the story was very specific, which made me wonder.
The title of the song comes from a sample of a Ministry concert in 1987, which Reznor recorded on a video tape camera and later used in the song’s production.[3] The name of his project, Nine Inch Nails, which according to Reznor has no “literal meaning”,[4] was also taken from the same tape, during a portion where Al Jourgensen compares Ministry to a man with a tall nail hammered into his head, creating a hole there:
"Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole."
In other words, Al was first again. I wonder if he created god, Chicago or the fall of USSR.

Fuckin A! That was the story. But, still, is it true? Maybe this DJ just pulled it off this site you found?

Sad that in history most mentors end up on the verge of bankruptcy or destitute somehow…too much thrifty spending or wasted resources on illegal substances, bad investments, etc…who knows but I will say despite my animosity for Uncle Al, his protege being a multi-millionaire versus Al scrounging for change does not sit well with me.
Granted Reznor earned his money and he is a brilliant musical artist who deserves every penny and more, it still seems unfair that the forefathers dwindle away into squalor, ya know?!

[reply]Well, here comes the explanation from wikabibia

That was the same explanation given to me by a very zealous “fundie” girl in my high school as the discussion of NIN was brought up at the lunch table one day.
She also saw my Bauhaus t-shirt with the “The Sky’s Gone Out” cover printed on it, and imagined that this was not a reproduction of an eclipse image but rather an abstracted image of Christ’s hand being nailed to the cross, hahaha…original interpretation to say the least.
I always assumed the name was taken from the Wax Trax catalog’s description of Pailhead which they said was “tough enough to bite the heads off nine inch nails.” or some such.

I’ll have to look up the image to see if I can see it myself.
I don’t remember when it was pointed out to me, but it took someone else to help me see that Ministry’s LORAH was not just a blurry abstract landscape but . . . well, something a bit darker.
Trent has stated that he chose the name Nine Inch Nails because it sounded catchy and it was easy to abbreviate. I forget where I read this, but I remember it as being a relatively reliable source. Like something he himself said in an interview.
