Old Lady Drivers

Has anyone heard of this band? I heard about them thru the movie Brainscan(fyi they can be heard during the first murder scene where the guy gets his foot chopped off). Checked out a few songs and I really dig them. For those who don’t know these guys started off as a Grindcore band but started to incorporate Industrial into their sound in the 90’s. I’ve heard them get compared to Godflesh but they sound nothing alike. Anyways, just continuing my trend of starting threads about random and somewhat obscure bands

They were on the Combat/Earache “Grindcrusher” compilation around 1991 or whenever that came out (GREAT comp, by the way, if you can find it). I never really followed them after that. They were really noisy as I remember. I’ll have to try and dig some stuff up to jog my memory.

Formula is one of my favourite albums.

Sounds nothing like grindcore - more like a very synthy sounding Pure era Godflesh.

HA! I found it! I love this track. It was so unique and weirdly wild in its contrasts . . . but somehow it worked. I don’t how they do it, but they seem to create absolute chaos and maintain total control of it . . .

. . . it’s insanity. Like some horrible mad scientist stuck Septic Death, GodFlesh, and the Gypsy Kings into a beaker and then pissed in it before lighting it on fire.

the Old Lady Drivers stuff is grindcore/thrash… but it’s just the one album of it. after that they went with O.L.D. moniker which marks the more experimental phase.

Lo Flux Tube, Formula & the Musical Dimensions of Sleestak are all pretty cool records.

Personally I hated the first record, and if I hadn’t heard some of the later stuff at a friends, I would have never believed it was any good.

James Plotkin is a really underrated musician. He also does production and mastering.

Agree with Peligro.

Formula is a worthy addition to just about anyone’s collection here - even grmpy’s.

Why? Did Erie Load remix it?

Erie is an incredible producer and remixer.

Repeating the love for Formula. I picked it up for $1 in a bargain bin when I saw the Mosh imprint and later went and got Sleastack though haven’t given it a proper spin. Judging on this record alone, te Godflesh comparisons aren’t very accurate but the repetitious samples and processed vocals remind of times of JKB’s work throughout the years.

Definitely worth hearing for “Under Glass” alone.

Great band, OLD. Did awesome stuff, but I don’t think they were as evocative as Khanate. For obvious reasons, though… totally different aesthetic and intention. But still, they were definitely important in their own way. Their idea of the remix is really something Al should look into…
