NY

I’m going on vacations in April to New York.

Any non expensive suggestions?

Thanks

Well, from a record buyer’s point of view, you’re going to want to stop by Othermusic and Kim’s Video (look 'em up on the Web for addresses and phone numbers). Those stores are amazing!

Why would you go on vacation to NYC ?

Because it’s one of the best cities in the country? Silly!

The aforementioned are suitable enough - Kim’s is a powerhouse…even Jimmy Thirwell loves it (he told me)…

Go get discount theater tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square. The Cripple of Inishmaan is brilliant, and I’ve heard that August: Osage County is the best show going right now.

August: Osage Co. is fantastic. I saw it in June and was blown away. Beware, though, if I remember right, it’s over 4 hours long so plan accordingly.

Also, I know it sounds corny and touristy, but take the rooftop bus tour. If you’re feeling brave, buy some weed and walk around times square smoking a joint. I’ts fun.

go to the village…search it & you’ll find things.

go to the museum of modern art–MOMA.
the guggenheim also. the metropolitan museum of art. and i recall all of these have free or discount days.
if it’s still there, MOMA has a great collection of americans like jackson pollock. the met has a portrait of gertrude stein by picasso which is one of those paintings you see in person, and wow.
the museums are always good there.
otherwise, go to jacque torres in brooklyn afterwards and have a fine chocolate.

Go to Papaya King for a hot dog. Anyone here had one? They looked good on the Food Network, anyway.

Agreed on all this too, MoMA is truly a sight to see. Even the inner architecture there is cool, and it’s not even a featured attraction.

Also, there is the Museum of Sex:

And if you want to check out cheap drink deals:

And
of course, if you’re a tourist, use this handy dandy for getting around by train:

They’re okay. I’d still rather have Nathan’s. The papaya juice there is not that great either…but their fries and chili dogs aren’t bad

Really? I haven’t been there in two years but…

ARGH! MOTHERFUCKER! Its true. Closed down just a month ago. That is really a goddamn shame, it was a great place.

Well, scratch that.

Oh yeah, to the original poster, check out
www.yelp.com
good place for user reviews on a lot of different things…restaurants, bars, etc

Also don’t forget Central Park. It’s beautiful at certain times of the year, i.e. not right now so don’t go recently if possible. It’s chilly.

Oh yeah? I have a feeling we’re missing out on real Nathan’s in AZ. There’s a Nathan’s kiosk in the food court (that says it all) at Arizona Mills Mall in Tempe, and I swear it’s just generic Oscar Mayers on shit buns. Not good at all, and probably not the genuine article.

On the flip side, we do have Ted’s Charbroiled from Buffalo. Funny thing, upstate NY has about 20 Ted’s, and AZ has one (the brother of the owner, from what I gather), and their dogs and fries are fucking amazing. About the best dog I can get apart from driving to Hollywood for a Pink’s dog. Mustard, chili and onions, all you need for a great dog. Sheez, I must be hungry.

Thanks everyone.

First of all I go to New York because I have a place to stay.

I’ve never been out of Europe so I think it’s a great place to start . I’ll definitely go the museums and do the usual tourist tour. I’m also trying to see a Knicks game and a play, so thanks for the tips.

Food and beverages are also a priority, so again, thanks for the yummy suggestions. I usually pay 1 euro for a beer in Portugal, that’s not even 2 dollars. I guess it’s a good opportunity to get sober. eheh just kidding, that open bar site ruined my plans of sobriety.

So, if you know other nice non tourist spots let me know.

Thanks.

well april throbbing gristle is playing NYC… the first show sold out but they may be adddind a second date… worth seeing at least one concert in NYC when you;re here… it’s at the masonic temple in brooklyn.

kim’s video did not close down. they just moved their shit around the block and downsized quite a bit. they are now on 1st ave and 11th or so.

I could have sworn that i read that they were getting kicked out due to rent increases and were looking for somebody to take care of the whole collection they got… and they finally did… somebody from italy or france or something… reading that I ASSumed it’d mean they were moving the stuff overseas.

Funny, I was just in Mesa a week ago. Nathan’s is totally nationwide now…they’re basically like any other hot dog, but they are skinny, slightly smaller in size, and known for being “juicy” when you bite into them. It’s not a misnomer, they are pretty much the same at the actual Nathan’s in Coney Island. The fries are awesome, though…so hot you need small plastic utensils to touch them.

Oh wow, cool that’s a little relieving…in that case I better pay another visit soon so I can at least get some good grabs, and pics!!

Los Dos Molinos.

There’s one in Phoenix and one in NYC. I’ve been to both and they are pricey but definitely worth it. Good atmosphere, food, margaritas and beer selection. Get you some flautas, you won’t regret it. Both of their salsa’s pack some heat, but if you can take it they are great.

Tenohtwo, do you know what I’m talking about? I also went to a sandwich shop in Tempe, where everything was weed themed. Cheeba Hut, I think? Good stuff, but most food is when you’re lifted.

Kid Robot.

Designer toy store in Soho. Very unique.

APT.

Converted apartment bar with a dance club downstairs. Had a really good time there. Located in the meat packing district.

the Ritz

Gay bar close to Times Square. A cabbie recommend it to me, my wife and our couple friends without mentioning it was a gay bar. We had a good time there. It was so gay, it was hilarious. Only in a gay bar, a rave or a Widespread Panic show do you see more than half the population shirtless and sopping wet from dancing.
