NY/NJ Peeps - Help

I am going to NYC in August for a few days. My wife was thinking we could go a few days early and tack on some days in NJ with my little guy.

She was thinking of Wildwood, Ocean City, Atlantic City, Seaside Heights, etc… You know fun/cheesy things to do with an 8 year old.

I know some of you live in the NY region, and I was wondering if you could give me an update on the area. Not sure if things are anywhere back to normal after Hurricane Sandy.

Are the beaches back, are they trying to rebuild them, etc? Or would it be better if we stayed out of the area?

Thanks in advance!

Al

NY beaches, there’s not many, I’m guessing you’re referring to Rockaway, Manhattan, Brighton and Coney Island?

I don’t really know honestly even though I live here. I think they are ok though. It’s the businesses that were really hurt. I’m sure Coney is gonna be back and running soon, summer is big for Lunapark. Take him there. It’s awesome.

fuck realized you said August…honestly don’t worry then. nearly a year later and they’ve basically cleaned them since I’m sure. August will be fine.

Thanks for the info. I’ve always wanted to do Coney since I was young. - Although the two things that I had to go on were freak shows, and The Warriors movie.

Now, just need to find out about the Jersey shore… (not the show… the beaches…)

You’ll be happy to know that Astroland (end of The Warriors) looks pretty close to what it was in the film, I was lucky enough to see it before it started to get more commercialized. Coney Island is a total shithole and there’s a lotta people out there who want it to look like Vegas for some reason.

Realistically yes, Coney and E Queens got hit by the storm, but there’s been a somewhat decent turnaround. I suspect NYC will be just what you want to see it as by that time.
Luna Park is awesome now, do check it out, and of course try to partake in as much Nathan’s (hot dogs and fries) as you can.

I have nothing to add on NJ shores, any other peeps have anything to add on that?

It was Coney Island, they called Coney Island the playground of the world.

There was no place like it, in the whole world,
like Coney Island when I was a youngster.

No place in the world like it, and it was so fabulous.
Now it’s shrunk down to almost nothing…you see.

And, uh, I still remember in my mind how things used to be, and…uh, you know, I feel very bad.

But people from all over the world came here…
from all over the world…it was the playground they called it the playground of the world…over here.

Anyways, you see, I…uh…you know…
I even got, when I was very small, I even got lost at Coney Island, but they found me…on the…on the beach.

And we used to sleep on the beach here, sleep overnight…they don’t do that anymore.
Things changed…you see.

They don’t sleep anymore on the beach.

Wildwood!!

I loved Wildwood as a kid. Pt.Pleasant and Seaside pale in comparaison, imo. While Seaside was the place to go at one point, it has changed quite a bit, has gotten a bit raunchier/diriter thanks to, you guessed it, the tv show The Jersey Shore. I assure you (bad pun? ) that the jersey shore and people like that weren’t like the before the show.

Wildwood has 3 or 4 piers with tons of game stands, arcades, rides, food, and the beach is free (not like that in other parts of the shore) . There’s tons of stuff to do away from the boardwalk too- plenty of great resturants, mini golf, etc. there’s one place, Duffers, which has an arcade, resturant, an ice cream palor, and mini golf all attached to the same place.

I’m planning a vacation there myself this year in May, to go along with the 20th anniversary of the first time I was there. memories…

oh, and while there’s a few cool haunted houses there now (which I’ve yet to check out as I haven’t been to wildwood in about 7 years) there was the ULTIMATE haunted house- Castle Dracula.

seriously, check out this video to see how awesome this place was. it was a real landmark of the boardwalk and sadly it burned down about a decade ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlgNC2-cyqI
