No!

For those who remember these days, it’s hard to imagine the web without the countless simply-designed yet well-meaning Geocities pages. I still have quite a few old bootleg pages bookmarked for nostalgia. I miss the days when the sole purpose of the web wasn’t just to sell you things.

Eh, I had one for shits and giggles. Even a homestead account. It was fun.

Damn.

This sucks. Wretched Geocities fansites from everything to gaming to extremely fucked-up Japanese porn was what fueled my digital childhood.

/nods

That’s a shame.

Yeah there are still a lot of bootleg trading sites that I have marked as well, as “one day I’ll email for that <insert band name> dvd”… ahh well, true I suppose that most of them havent been updated since 2002 but still!

has to do more with the move to social networking. Everyone used to have a shitty homepage, then blog, myspace, facebook, twitter, etc.

you just have to assume, that people moved on, forgot their passwords or just didn’t care after it was up and no longer ‘new’ to bother.

You can just use Google to read usenet, if you care.

My service provider recently canceled my access to the USENET groups. Times are changing. Everyone has cable TV, internet, and cell phone plans now. Add up that money and think about how much cash you are throwing around to communicate in mindless ways. Or how much you are wasting on these things and not taking advantage of them. Who has 150 channels and watches about 5 of them? Who has $40 cell phone plans and only uses the phone occasionally. Who has high speed interent just so that the commercial ads don’t bog down your connection to a snails pace.

I’m getting old and I am getting grumpy. DANGIT!

Says the guy on the mindless message board!
Aside from the 150 channels tv argument which is a good one. I’m for All of these mindless ways to communicate. You know, people don’t interact anymore. It’s dangerous to talk to strangers, hell it’s dangerous to take a fuckin walk! The Internet has made it possibe for us to talk to each other again. While I don’t participate in twitter or facebook I think they are great ideas that bring people together. Hell look at prongs. chances are if we all lived in the same town but didn’t have a message board to all conviene at we would never know each other. We are such an eclectic group and eclectic looking group(for those of us who have posted pics at one time or another) that I’m sure we would be biased to each other and not even think to speak to anyone of us. Now we are able to dislike each other based on our personality qualities.(Hey Peligro, what’s going on?) That’s good right?

Long shot, but

Geocities was my first attempt at web-design as well.
Yeah, the world is changing and one cant complain about that, but Geocities closing does make one think…
