It begs the question: why do all this when he says he’s putting NIN to rest?
To keep himself busy?
NIN aint finished, they’re just getting some rest.
Also I think its a great thing major record companies are in the shit nowadays. They’ve freeloaded long enough, time to cut out the middlemen.
He never said he was ending NIN. I don’t remember the exact quote, but it implied more of an extended vacation, and if he’s got time to license some phone apps or breakfast cereals or whatever while he’s on vacation, more power to him.
Keep in mind as well that’s his hiatus won’t actually start until after the NINJA tour.
EDIT: Is Trent’s head getting as big as Al’s? Maybe it’s some disease they all caught when they were on tour with RevCo…
I can’t believe the icon that trent has turned into! I remember back in the early 90’s, late 80s when he was unheard of! then he was marginally popular after TDS and towards the end of the 90’s up until now he’s achieved GOD-LIKE status!! good for him!

Trent was considerably well known before Downward Spiral and was certainly more than marginally popular after it. He was a pin up boy of angst/teenage rock for most of the 90s. I know many people who have had a poster of Reznor on their wall at some point during the 90s. It would be interesting to see how much his recent albums have sold compared to Downward Spiral, my guess is there would not be much of a discrepancy or that the more recent stuff has shifted less.
He was well known in the industrial scene due to PHM, then when he got attached to Lollapalooza and MTV started playing Head Like A Hole a lot he became one of the top acts of the budding “alternative” scene.
When “Closer” took off is when he really got big, and your fratboy roommate had his CD too.
Just compare his status from now to his status during and a little after TDS it was no where near the status he has now… and that’s all I’m saying.

I don’t know, back then he was all over the covers of Rolling Stone and SPIN and Alternative Press and pretty much every music magazine. “Head Like A Hole” continued to chart high as a single on the Billboard lists. Now when you read about him it’s as often in regards to music business analysis as it is to music making.
OK I’M WRONG YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT I HATE MYSELF NOW! HAPPY? YOU GOT WHAT YOU WANT!!

I can remember just when PHM came out Trent was on 120 Minutes sometime in December of '89, and Dave Kendall made a lame attempt at a joke about what Trent used to hang up his stockings at Christmas. Gee I wonder what that could be [;)]
I can see what Grmpy is getting at, although the God-like worship of NIN is somewhat diminished, Trent’s range as an artist has grown immensely. He has just been smart in the business sense, and kept his work fresh while the shelf life of many of his contemporaries has expired.
That does not mean I am a big fan or anything, I haven’t cared all that much for his music after PHM to tell you the truth, but I can respect the things that he has accomplished, even if he is basically, to borrow a phrase from Tom Ellard, the wal-mart of industrial.
he’s brilliant when it comes to marketing. he does things that are interesting, unique and thereby make them almost viral. i’m torn though on wondering if he hires the right people - or if it is his whole brainchild (marketing-wise)
I think as far as mass popularity it was woodstock 94 that blew nin up
these two quotes have just made you my new best friend!!![:)]

Probably a bit of both.
