Any Nick Cave fans here?? I’m pretty certain he’s been mentioned here before. I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone with a ‘substantial’ Nick Cave collection (including Birthday Party).
Have been a follower since 1991. Never fails to amaze me - craps over 99% of current ‘rock’ music wank.
BIG influence on Al Jourgenson too!!
Faves in order:
Your Funeral My Trial (best Cave ever)
From Her To Eternity
Tender Prey
The Good Son
First Born Is Dead
The Boatman’s Call
dislike:
Let Love In
Nocturama (aaaaawful Nick, awful!)
Murder Ballads
Kicking Against The Pricks
Abbatoir Blues/ Lyre Of Orpheus
Also, check out ‘Ghosts Of The Civil Dead’ if you haven’t already - great film, compelling cinema, yada yada yada…
Until recently, I overlooked Nick Cave. I had heard of him but nothing more than that. I knew one of the songs as it got regular play on the radio in the UK (“Do You Love Me”). A few months ago, I was in some bar and heard a track and immediately found out what it was from the jukebox. I went out and bought a few albums of his the next day. I don’t know why I didn’t check out his work earlier but wow - I am intrigued by his work.
Lesson learned: always keep your ears open in public places.
I got into Cave because of Blixa Bargeld who of course plays guitar on the majority of his releases. Nick is a bit annoying and pretentious to me but he makes up for it with the amount of awesome songs he did. He is definitely one of the best lyricists out there.
I’m ashamed to say I don’t have much of a Nick Cave collection, however, I actually saw The Birthday Party live.
I found this blurb about the show on some site…
10-Oct-81
US IL,Chicago,COD’s
Note: Last date of tour. Money and a bottle of drugs are thrown on stage. Nick & Rowland sample some pills from the bottle on the flight from Chicago to London. Read more in Ian Johnston’s biography “Bad Seed”.
Yeah, I’m rather fond of Nick Cave, although I don’t really get why he’s considered “goth,” what the fuck is that about? I don’t have too much of a collection anymore, although I regularly listen to some of the more popular works…I especially like his work with Current 93.
think the goth thing had something to do with the hairdo when he was in birthday party, but apart from that no relation.
i have the bad seed book, great read, check him out with Brad Pitt in the film Johnny Suede (?), brief appearance in Wings of Desire, and his small part in Ghosts of the Civil Dead…“there goes the neighbourhood…” [:)] classic
i must admit i never got arounf to completing the collection…
i have ‘your funeral my trial’ and ‘from here to eternity’ (and the 12" of nick the stripper)
music nerd trivia note that you all probably know…
the ‘your funeral my trial’ track ‘Scum’ is about Jim Thriwell and the Foetus track ‘sickman’ of ‘hole’ is about Cave, and the ‘from her to eternity’ track wings off flies was written by Cave and Thirlwell on Lydia Lunch’s piano.
