[reply]What do you think about Selani not hanging it up? You think he’s still useful?
He still has talent obviously. He is one of the world’s greatest hockey players and the thing with hockey is that it’s such a team sport, that even having veterans around for team support is vital. Let him run his course - teams like Detroit have proven that there is still room for the skillful, older players.

I’m just worried about him becoming another Roenick, Roenick was bad ass, there in the day, but he probably hung on about 3 years too long now, his little stint with the kings was pitiful

this is true but people forget that the majority of their team now is very skilled younger guys like zetterberg and datsyuk (younger as in late 20s). i think they do an outstanding job of balancing young talent with senior leadership. they also get the older guys like chelios to play for next to nothing which is nice too. ill be rooting for the sabres 100% but won’t be upset when the wings win another set of back to back championships
True, Zetterberg and Datsyuk but not as young as early 20s as you say - so they’re medium range and those guys will be hot even in 5-8 years from now providing they don’t get massively injured. But Lidstrom (Detroit captain), close to 40, is definitely on the top 5 list of active players - he is amazing to this day.
Young teams like Buffalo, Phoenix, etc, need at least one veteran player. Just for guidance if nothing else. Imagine how someone like a Lidstrom, Jagr, Brind’Amour, etc, would guide those young kids pretty far into the playoffs. Someone who has the ring and can lead the boys with passion.
And James Hetfield is 45.
And I hope Lidstrom does play for another 10 years.
Everyone is forgetting about Chelios… 46 years old, and 25 seasons in the NHL!
We should have kept him in Montreal instead of trading him for Denis Savard.
I also admire Chelios but it has to be said - I almost think there is a sense of narcissism when they know they aren’t as effective and yet, refuse to step down. Classic example: Hasek. Perfect example. One of the greatest goaltenders without a doubt. Yet, he just didn’t know when to leave and the more he played, the more unreliable he was, as was proven in the playoffs. If they hadn’t put Osgood between the pipes, Detroit would have struggled far more. People rarely mention Hasek nowadays alongside the word “legend” as they used to (people tend to remember the latest events).
I certainly hope Chelios doesn’t turn into that but I doubt it. In his case, though he wasn’t doing it for the money or fame, he has to think how much he is benefiting the team, and they overlook this and this is where the narcissism steps in.
hasek is a god and statistically he is without a doubt one of the top goalies ever. the year before last he was amazing in the playoffs (18 games - 1.79 gaa, .923 sv %). so i think he did know when to stop playing.
i hate ozzy for letting in those last 2 goals in game 5 of the stanley cup last year. i was 35 seconds away from witnessing the cup being lifted and he had to screw me hehe.
I hope Sundin comes back to play - he needs to play for a team that is close to winning the cup? Montreal? Imagine if he wins.
I tell you one player to keep an eye out for: Jonathan Tavares. He will be the next good one - I saw him playing in some Junior games and wow. I think Toronto will finish last so that they can pick him up (would make sense).
How about them Rangers? Naslund - need I say more? Sad to see him leave Vancouver but it’s good to see the Rangers aren’t full of the “look at me! look at me!” players.

That would drive people nuts. We’ve always disliked him in Montreal, but I’m sure we’d take him if he offered. If for no other reason that to piss Toronto off.
Montreal are indeed looking good this year!
