So yeah, its better than Scorpio Rising but dont expect to hear anything like Rude Awakening or Cleansing (the former being the best Prong album, IMO). Not surprisingly, Victor follows Al’s footsteps and this is a pretty straight forward thrash metal release, relying more on guitar texture and musical chops of the musicians rather than on good songwriting. The result is a somewhat patchy thrash metal release with some decent parts but also with a lot of tedious uninspired riffs throughout.
What’s the older prong material like? I heard one of the newer songs and wasn’t into it much. The song I heard didn’t even sound thrashy (I don’t think), just sounded like generic metal. But a lot of people always say the older prong material isn’t half bad. So is there that much of a difference from now and then?
Yes. Prong kinda went along and mutated through out their discography.
The early stuff Primitive Origins & Force Fed are kinda NYC old-school Hardcore-ish, they briefly did a semi-thrash record with Beg to Differ. They went into a more Killing Joke/Helmet- ish direction for Prove You Wrong then starting doing stuff a little more industrial metal influenced on Cleansing (+a remix EP) & Rude Awakening. Then they broke up.
Scorpio Rising wasn’t horrible, but it certainly reminded me of the Prove You Wrong ‘era’ but a play by numbers version of it.
I haven’t heard the ‘Power of the Damager’ yet myself, but I’m not really dying to either.
Honestly, it’s just not Prong w/o Ted Parsons on drums.
the only song by Prong Ive ever really liked was “snap your fingers snap your neck”
That was released years ago on a cd that had nothing really good on it.
If it is as thrashy as you have said maybe its not even worth me trying to listen to. I tend to get so jaded when i actually give new music a chance and it ends up sucking.
I can tend to be a little difficult too, when it comes to finding new music. But I am curious to hear older prong, although it’s certain that i’ll likely never be a fan of the newer stuff, just judging by that one song. But as one band put it…nothing’s shocking…
i just thought i’d say that this album grew on me somewhat since it was released. Still not up to par with their best stuff but not an embarrasment either. Some riffs and guitar textures are great.
