I’m sure half of you hate NIN, but for the other half, a brand new song (mastered yesterday!) was released to radio today. It’s called “Discipline,” and seeing as Reznor’s Web site now says “2 weeks!”, I think we can expect at least a brand new EP of fully formed songs in the near future.
heard it earlier and thought it would have fit in okay on with teeth. i didn’t hate that album like i did year zero. i do like that supposedly the song was just mastered this week and he’s releasing it already. i’m glad finck is back with nin, now if trent could get the rest of the guys from that era to stop hating him and go back to the studio maybe he could record something really good again.
and bring back the keyboards? When did they get old?
What kind of “industrial” do you want to hear, carmangary? I can probably recommend something. I think some parts of Ghosts I-IV were a step closer to industrial than Year Zero was, though I wouldn’t use it as a defining example of pure industrial, of course.
“Discipline” is extremely With Teethy. I was hoping it would be a cover of the same-titled Throbbing Gristle single. [:P]
Year Zero, I consider the most “industrial” sounding in a very long time. And i’ve just heard the new song, and agree that it sounds a lot like With Teeth, but better. Never cared too much for the With Teeth album. Might be only album I consider near forgettable.
If anyone knows of any good bands or albums within the last 5-10 yrs I’ve love to hear about it. Is industrial completely dead?
Try any of the I, Parasite releases
Penal Colony - Unfinished Business came outa few years ago and was really good.
I realy liked 16 Volt’s new album
Emergence’s Science Of Suffering or Eschaton were both pretty good
Babyland’s always solid and I really liked The Finger (their 2004 album)

I agree about “Year Zero” sounding more like Wax Trax-style industrial than anything in a while (I’d say since Primal Scream’s “Evil Heat” which sounding to me like what I’d have wanted WT! to be producing if they’d never stopped). It actually surprised me that Trent would be the one to do a modern industrial as I’d always sort of felt that he’d killed it in the first place.
I like the new track pretty well. It’s a fun pop song and I like the Daft Punk/Kanye West-y vocoder at the front of the song. I liked With Teeth pretty well, way better than the Fragile. I thought YZ was much better though and continue to listen to it every now and then.
If you like Nitzer Ebb you might enjoy the '07 album by Motor. It’s the guy from Haloblack and a techno producer. The NE dude sings on a track and the overall feel of the album is pretty cool in an Ebby kind of way.
Here it is:

I like it[:)]
Ugh, I just don’t like this new NIN-lite sound. Cheap sounding dance drums (esp. the 909ish hats), bare melodies, too much compression (a problem in most of today’s music), and Trent singing like he’s growing a vagina. Year Zero had one or two OK tracks, but the last two albums just bore me. The less-is-more approach doesn’t suit NIN well, in my opinion. Dude seriously needs to revisit his copy of Broken, or give J.G. Thirlwell a call, something to light a fire under his ass…

Trent Reznor iz still a bad ass and Year Zero iz a thousand times better than With Teeth.By bringing out an industrial sounding album (year zero) He’s one of the few assholes keeping industrial alive u should thank him 4 that.
Industrial iz not dead, but itz on life support
fuck, Year Zero is full of meaningless blips and bleeps, the remix album is actually better, and i thought With Teeth was good.
lookin forward to the new stuff.

Suppose you’re not a fan of Twitch? Where You At Now/Crash and Burn/Twitch, in particular? That one had some “meaningless” sound to it, didn’t it? I think year zero was an absolutely great album. I enjoyed the random glitchy sounds that came with it.

I don’t listen to electronic music much anymore but i don’t mind Motor (black powder off of their first album was nice) and a band named “Franz & Shape” if i’m in the right mood. You can hear the old 242 influences here and there.
anyhow check out http://www.fixmermccarthy.com/ if you haven’t yet. It’s a guy named Terence Fixmer and Douglas McCarthy (from Nitzer). if you like nitzer you should like this.
i lost track with “industrial” when bands like vnv nation just started taking over the genre and bands like haujobb started deteriorating. every once in a while i check out Metropolis Records website to see what they are putting out but most of it seems like garbage. BUT they just put out the new Meat Beat Manifesto and it is sounding pretty good.
I’ve listened to this song about 19 times today. Yes it’s reminiscent of With Teeth (‘Only’ to be precise) but it is by no means a bad song. Again, It’s very different from Year Zero but I’m thinking this future release will feature many varies of the ‘NIN’ sound. I like it, It’s catchy a lot like how ‘God Given’ was recieved.
I’m not about to throw in the towel on Reznor yet, but to be honest I don’t think I ever will…God I’m biased… He could fart along to a drum machine and I’d still like it, lol…I jest (course I wouldn’t like that!).
I am looking forward to what he releases album wise though, Ghosts ruled as did YZ and I liked a lot of tracks on WT.
[cool]

Yes yes yes. Everyone should check out Babyland.
Why is his work so overrated? I mean, at least from my viewpoint. The past 2 albums, particularly Year Zero, yielded very little interest, yet people still jump to every little bit of news of Trent. He did awesome financially with Ghosts, which, let’s admit, wasn’t worth the hundreds were paying for the box set.
I was really never into him - I did enjoy TDS a lot but apart from that, and thought it was a breakthrough album, but this was over 10 years ago. Otherwise, his work was mediocre. Yeah, the Fragile had a few good tracks (out of 23). I actually didn’t mind With Teeth either for what it was - it had some good standout tracks. At least he didn’t take a formula and just go with it.
I just don’t understand this obsession with him. I think people long for him to produce music to make themselves feel like the silly little teenagers they were when they first heard TDS - ain’t going to happen.
But I suppose he’s like PJ - I know quite a few who are going to see them at Lolla over the summer, yet they haven’t owned anything since The Fragile, and don’t care to much.
Pretty Hate Machine and “Hurt” from Downward Spiral and theat ends the list for me with Trent Related music…
Late,

His first 3 releases were gold, after that its been the bloated machine. He should stick to Eps and censor himself.

Who’s PJ?
