Very electronic this time around…

“Spirit” album due on March 17

Sweet…thanks. I always visit new DM. This one sounds pretty good compared to the last 2 or so releases I’ve heard from them.

It’s pretty good overall. DM is one of my all time favorites, so I’m excited for the full album.

Meh.

When are they going to go back to putting proper beats in their songs? It was the same with the last album: glitchy, syncopated percussion, but no actual beat. Can I get a fucking kick drum in there once in a while?

They’ve been in “adult contemporary” mode since Exciter imo and this track is a little better, but still kind of dull. Then again, I was never the hugest DM fan so what do I know.

Yikes… I mean Gahan’s vocals still sound amazing and soulful as ever but they gotta stop sounding like some goofy electronic band from the 2000s.
I did enjoy a track or two from their last album though… but they gotta do something about their sound. Does nothing for me.

I think it’s kinda dull. It’s a single though. I’m sure it’ll be a good album. I’ve yet to be disappointed by them. Every album has it’s dud. This is probably it.

Agreed. There hasn’t been much of what you’re referring to since Alan Wilder left DM over 20 years ago.

When “Ultra” was released in 1997 it was cool to see that Jaki Liebezeit (Can) had contributed percussion to some of the tracks. I thought this might signal a change in direction, but…

DM is one of my favorite bands, but their last two albums are forgettable, and this new single is not very encouraging. I’m tired of the blues stomp formula that has crept into half of their songs. Their tempos have slowed down, the melodies are forgettable, and their recent love for analog synths (and/or VA) has removed all the life from their music. Their ‘drums’ barely have any punch to them, they’ve all but ditched the use of samplers and digital synths. These days, they sound like the bleeps, sweeps and creeps from Spaceballs. Give us the raspberry, Lone Star.

The last single worth a damn was Precious from 2005. That album actually had a pulse (albeit a brick-walled pulse). I remember DM posted a b/w pic of a bunch of modular synths (new and old) on their FB, and a bunch of fans went nuts, like ‘OH MY GOD, ANALOG SYNTHS, THEY’RE GOING BACK TO THEIR ROOTS’. I doubt most of them knew what they were even looking at, and if anyone remembers how Speak & Spell and A Broken Frame sounded, it’s hardly a reason to be excited.

I think their days of epic, memorable singles are long gone. I am setting my expectations low.
