The new Depeche Mode album is currently streaming for free on iTunes. It’s surprisingly bluesy and electronic. It sounds like they sampled a ton of vintage analog synthesizers and then just started layering sounds. “Broken” sounds like it could have been released 30 years ago. “Soothe My Soul” sounds familiar - like they recycled the bass line from “Personal Jesus.” Good stuff.
Quite a few songs here that could easily go on Speak and Spell. Bluesy, but not too much. Angel kind of reminds me of The The. Definitely noticed a few things that were recycled, which I think is kinda cool for the sake of nostalgia. Really enjoying Should Be Higher. Dave’s range on that one was insane. I originally thought it was Martin.

Agreed. That might be the best track on the album.
Really like this album. A massive improvement over the last one. Bit in the vein of Exciter, with mainly downtempo/quiet numbers. Wonder how they’ll work live, as the Exciter tour bored the hole off me.
The only downside is that they don’t have as many anthemic numbers nowadays compared to when Alan Wilder was in the band.
I’m digging it. I really like the bonus tracks as well.
