Interesting article, thanks slack. I’m gonna check out the all4mp3 site when I get home.

Man I’m glad I’ve been putting my CD collection into FLAC. If any other interesting lossless format comes out that will work better, will take a few hours to convert everything .
But I agree - what is the purpose of this?

i guess so you can have the lossless quality of FLAC with teh compatibility standards of mp3? i’m not sure but how common is it for a portable music player to support FLAC?
I wonder if there would be any loss transferring from Lossless to lossless… I suppose not or it wouldnt be lossless right?
I think a few of the more pricey MP3 players support FLAC… I havent seen many though.
Sony has already done this with their ATRAC Lossless format. As in, they did the exact same thing (a ‘lossless’ file made out of two streams, one lossy and the other the lost). Do you see any players besides the last line of Sony MD players using this format? No.
Guys I can’t stand this. Ever since mp3 was created, it has interrupted the concept of enjoying an album as a whole for me. I de-construct my MP3’s, edit them (even adding higher decibals for older albums) and I can never bring myself to FLAC. I like it, but it’s for live recordings only imo…it’s a territory I cannot venture, for it can be a territory you will never stray.
And goddamn, it can get pricey with hard drives…

What the catgoat said, man. Good quality with fuss-free compatibility.
Still, 320kbps does the job juuuust fine.

What’s wrong with FLAC - it doesn’t mess with the files - it is lossless, so what you encode into FLAC is the source sound (or damned close to it)?
Nothing wrong with it…I lost my point really, drinking does that to ya…
I just can’t stand listening to things in pieces anymore, nor do I have space sometimes for things like FLAC. Yeah, I can still tolerate 192 or 320…I am so old. I’ll hit FLAC status one day…
