Could they have picked a more generic sounding singer? I’ve never been a big fan of Alice in Chains (never hated them either) but Layne’s vocals were kind of the signature sound of the band. To me, at least.
The problem is back in 1990 Layne Staley’s vocal stylings were actually pretty cool and unique (plus he really did have a stage charisma) but in 2013 . . . we got Creed, Nickelback, and every other post-grunge pile of processed faggitry. I was never a big fan of Alice in Chains either . . . but I certainly don’t care to see them with whatever zero-personality Jonny-come-lately douchemeister that just learned how to be a frontman by watching Rockstar Supernova.
I don’t find fault with his singing, and if I was an AIC fan I’d probably be pleased as they still capture that authentic AIC sound. I just prefer something a bit more unique and energetic with respect to live performances. As an outsider who is apathetic to the band to begin with, but does remember Layne’s stage charisma, they need to put up a bit more than the guy that got a perfect score singing RockBand. But I’m not their target market anyway, so if the fans dig it and it works for the band, then more power to them.
His voice is too bland, inoffensive and “pleasing” - as if he practiced in front of the mirror for three days straight to get that Layne Staley drawl and was content to use that as his “singing voice”.
There’s nothing about the vocals or the music that makes me think: interesting. I really wanna hear more of that. what else have they got to offer?
I was never an Alice In Chains fan at all, but at least with Layne Staley they caught my attention once in blue moon.

I saw them live several years ago when they first got the new dude (black guy right?), they were ok and I actually was impressed with how much the new dude sounded like layne, but for someone who is not a fan like yourself, and the forum’s toughest music critic. I could see why you wouldn’t like it
