need some turntable help

how do you know when you have to replace the needle?
the reason I ask is because I have to crank my volume all the way to the max volume setting in order to get to a somewhat listenable volume.

I have the ION usb turntable that comes with a usb cord to hook into the computer as well as red and black av jacks to hook into the reciever. I don’t remember the player playing this low of a volume before which is why I thought it might be my needle

I’m sure one of you guys knows… TIA

It sounds like you need a new needle.

I’d recommend picking up two of these…

Two of these…

And one of these…

Once you have these you will never have to worry about buying equiptment again for the next 100yrs.

Oh and you’ll need a kick ass sound system to accompany these goodies.

Are you sure you have your turntable plugged into a preamp (or phono) jack instead of a normal input?

This. Most older turntables, not to mention stereos, do not have pre-amplification. You can pick one up these days for probably less than ten bucks if you poke around.

You’ll need a microphone also so you can say “Throw your hands in the air, and wave 'em like you just don’t care.”

Don’t forget…“I’m not internationally known, but I’m known to give a dog a bone!”

My new reciever doesn’t have a phono jack. So I just plugged it into video 2.

Stereos or preamplifers? what company sells a quality preamp for a minimal amount of cash?

It’s apparently my preamp [:(] or lack of. I hooked my turntable up into my old receiver specifically into the phono slot and it was beautiful… the sound was loud!!! the volume wasn’t even half way up! so I guess I gotta get a preamp

as far as trouble-shooting goes. i’d try to hook it up to something other than you’re computer - just to make sure its not something going on with your computer levels or drivers.

Radio Shack used to carry them but who knows now. I heard they will be changing there name to “The Shack” soon. Stupid move if you ask me. Anyway, sorry for the editorial.

I’ve got a bid in on one from ebay right now that’s over in a couple of days… “radio shack” sounds out dated “the shack” might be an improvement. but “The Shack” also sounds like a beach bar in Hawaii… who knows?

well I wasn’t running it through my comp so I don’t think that’s an issue… but I’ll keep that in mind for future trouble shooting

Honestly it doesn’t matter what a pre-amp costs. I bought a no-name brand on eBay for like 4 bucks and it suits me well.

Yea, once I saw what they were I kinda thought that, so the 4 dollar no name is what I’m bidding on right now…

I just scored some technics 1210s today for a great price. Been in Edinburgh for 7yrs and have been meaning to get a couple of 1210s to keep my vestax mixer company but have been ultra lazy due to my stereo having a crappy belt-driven turntable built in. Just have to score myself some ortofon concord needles.

Now let the fun begin!
