DSL might be cheaper but at least in my area Cable has much higher speeds. My 5mbps/2mbps connection will spank most DSL ISPs and for an extra $10 a month I can get 15mbps/2mbps.

True–monetarily, you do end up getting more bang for your buck with cable…but damn I hate Comcast and their uber-high cable prices and flooding my mailbox with reams of junk mail. I refuse to support those guys.

For my purposes and the type of internet activity I engage in, DSL works great.

Also depends where you live. I have DSL and works great. If I had cable in my high rise building with a 100+ apartments, it would be slow, especially if others had it. The cable may also be shared with the other high rises around me. Cable is shared; DSL is not.

When I used to live in Buffalo, NY, I had cable and when it first came out, I got it. I was told I was one of the first to order it in the area. Over the year after getting it, the speed declined as more and more people got it. I was living downtown and there were internet cafes, other apartments, etc. It got really bad and that tainted my views on cable.

Right now, I get 3.5mbps down and 700 kbps up dedicated for $27/month. Not bad at all, I don’t think…

True–I neglected to mention the “shared” aspect of Cable. I have no idea what the conditions are concerning that around here.

For being the most “wired” city in the country, internet service here is pretty expensive. Cable is a bit over $50, and the highest speed DSL is somewhere in the mid $40s. I pay $31 just for my measily 256k connection.

this thread’s a bit old but i’ve enjoyed listening to a few bands on myspace music, met some cool folk to collaborate with, check out my own page (in my sig).

As a cable customer with Comcast i pay $40/month and currently get 6mbps down on average and 1.5 up. The speeds have gone up a lot here the past year or so here. Especially the uploads. But what i like is that they have “powerboost” or whatever so for the first 15-20mb or so it will pull around 15mbps then goes back down to 6. but i use usenet a lot and everything is basically in 15mb chunks so it stays around 15 for everything downloaded on there. So i can get 700mb movies in well under 10 minutes. It’s pretty stupid. I’m sure they’ll fix this “loophole” at some point but for the past 6 months or so it’s been great.
