modern DAT?

What is the safest, most reliable modern day equivalent to a DAT machine for backing track playback that WILL NOT fuck up?

You could run a stereo 2-mix out of a digital multitrack recorder. I have a 16-track Fostex (MR16), but more tracks = pricier (if you don’t already have one). You can get a 4 or 8-track digital recorder fairly cheap ($200 neighborhood). Most (if not all) of them let you arrange a playlist (for CD burning), so you could arrange your set to play in sequence. If not, the individual songs load fast.

You know, we use good old fashioned cassette tapes. They are super reliable and cheap. Back in the 80’s Neubauten used Walkmans!

How about mini-disk?

I’d just use a CD, but I don’t play live so what do I know?

True DAT!

Why not use a wavfile player? They’re cheap, you can back them up to your laptop and they’re really portable.

Wavfiles sound great, not compressed like iPod or MP3’s. The only stepping stone is “does the audio output sound good” since they’re usually meant for headphones. A high quality wavplayer like a Cowon would do the trick.

Sandisk Fuze and Sanza also get high marks for audio quality and don’t cost too much either.

I agree with this… and also, i’m sure (altho I’ve been out of this stuff for a while) that you can get one of these to sync to your sequencers.

Slack makes a great point… you can also use a multitracker as a MIDI controller, so you could trigger additional sequences, a drum machine, whatever, while playing tracks 1-2. You would just plug your audio inputs into 3-4 or elsewhere. I run all of my sequences live off of my workstation, just because it works best for our situation, but I do bring the MR-16 along to play my own intro/outro/between-set music. Very portable and lightweight, not very big, and it won’t skip like a CD or hiss like a cassette, and is less likely to crash than a pc/laptop.

I wish I knew what you guys were talking about. [:(]

I’m so lost.
