Moby

Can’t remember hearing much about this guy here. What you make of his music?

I’m listening to his new album ‘Wait for Me’. It’s the best thing he’s done in years. It’s stripped down, very plaintive and ethereal. Some of the ambient pieces are really good. Its probably the most consistent thing he’s done yet. It’s great reading/fading music. There’s no obvious “single” on it.

The last few albums he did were not my cup o’ tea. Some decent songs here and there but overall they didn’t do it for me. Much prefer the stuff he did in the 90s (namely ‘Animal Rights’). His cover of ‘New Dawn Fades’ is one of my favourite songs.

I hate Animal Rights.
I remember when some crack smoker at AP magazine said that Animal Rights and Danzig’s Blackacidevil were the albums of the year.
What a loony.

Moby is like the Prodigy, Crystal Method, Orbital, Underworld, Chemical Bros. or any other techno act that was in heavy rotation during MTV’s “electronica” phase. Plenty of good stuff, but some garbage you have to wade through to find it.

Pish.

I wouldn’t say moby is anything like those other artists. They at least pushed boundaries, to some degree.

Moby, to me, is more like electronica for people who don’t listen to electronica.

Heard a few of his songs but kinda found him a little boring. I really tried, but his stuff was just impossible to grasp. I’m a little curious though to hear his version of New Dawn Fades though.

It’s not bad. It’s him and New Order doing a revision. He is boring most of the time though. His new song with the vid directed by David Lynch is kinda cool.

I find I can’t listen to Moby’s music without thinking about him as a person and the pretentious interviews he always gives and it just ruins whatever good elements the music may have.

Which is few.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

It’s sorta similar with me. I find I can’t listen to it without thinking about brand new luxury cars, men’s aftershave, expensive watches, cell phones and computer hardware, etc etc etc [laugh]

He’s aight. Nothing spectacular. I dug the “Stars” video, though.

Same here, also whenever I hear Coldplay the first think I think of is any local tv weather team who are equipped with the latest weather tracking technology to keep you the viewer up to date at all times [;)]

I don’t really have an opinion on Moby other than he is a little vegan minimalist technophile bitch and his moniker is probably the worst in all of music.

But I will share a funny story about him. Some metal type guy I used to work with years ago claimed (and I don’t see a reason not to believe this) he shared a rehearsal space with some nutty video artist who was dead broke and living there.

The guy I guess had been sued by Moby because early in Moby’s career they did an art video together where Moby was featured wearing a dick helmet. After Moby became famous he sued the guy not to release the video and the guy was fighting the lawsuit because it was “his art”.

I found it entertaining.

I heard something before that Moby starred in a porno years back and then treid desperately to hide it, that could be the same thing… or not.

I don’t care for the man himself. Veganism is one step too far, and his whoring to advertisements is embarrasing but he does make good music from time to time.

I’ll be the Moby apologist for the board. It’s a shame his commercialism has diluted his work, because it makes it easy to forget how fantastic his early stuff was. Everything is Wrong sounds pretty dated, but it’s still a classic album. Play is solid too, as long as you ignore how ubiquitous it was.

His early ambient stuff is ok too. I own one of his albums from the early nineties when he was still…cough…‘underground’ and every now and then I will give it a spin.

It’s perfect music to wash the dishes to.

Can’t stand any of his other albums tho’.

I enjoy Moby. His last few albums have some good stuff and he’s great to play in yoga classes. Is he a little Middle of the Road? Yep. That’s OK, I don’t need to be cutting edge morning, noon and night and neither does the music I listen to.
