Ministry: The ESSENTIAL bootlegs, Best Sound Quality boots

Okay, so I’m not in the mood to hear the proper Ministry albums, I’d like to hear some live boots that may have some interesting variations on the classics or are just damn good performances with great sound. I think I have about 4 gigs or so of Ministry boots on MP3 but I really don’t have time to sort them, plus I thought it would make interesting discussion…

So what are the essential boots? Some of the early ones that had the post With Sympathy/pre Twitch era tracks are really good, not in terms of sound quality, but they have a lot of great tracks that never made it to any album.

Also the Lolapalooza tours yielded several decent live recordings didn’t they? I seem to remember “The Secret World of Ministry” as one of the better ones. Lots of these had pretty shitty sound but I seem to remember some good ones.

What about the Filth Pig/DSOTS/Animos Tours? Are there any good ones from this era? I think this is what I might be missing from.

I could give a shit less about the Bush-era stuff… if I want to hear thrash metal I’ll throw on some Slayer or something.

So yeah anyway, boots fans, help a guy out and suggest some good boots to throw on the ipod… If I had the time I’d curl up with a six-pack and listen to them all myself and cherry pick the best, but I don’t, so your input would help!

Thanks!

Dare I pimp my 2003 recording? Well, it’s not audio, but I do have the CDR/audio counterpart…

Are these all silver bottomed boots? I know house of bones, flashback and welcome to the secret… are all silver bottomed but what about the others? Anyone know?

Cool, thanks for that link… looks like some stuff I haven’t seen before. FLAC too, nice [:)]

Unless it has some truly memorable performance or sounds sonically amazing for a boot I wouldn’t be interested in it myself, but Grumpysmurf probably would, as he seems to be a completest on all things Ministry (even the bad shit). [;)]

Yeah, that is true… but, I’m only interested in silver cds or dvds. I don’t really care for mp3s or cdrs. I prefer the manufactured boots. I have no idea why or when that started or why I’m even such a snob about it.

What are these “silver bottoms” you speak of? And what are your favorite boots Grumpy?

What are these “silver bottoms” you speak of? And what are your favorite boots Grumpy?

The “silver bottoms” just mean they are professionally created. If you look at a cd that you bought from a music store you’ll see the bottom (data side) is silver and if you look at the bottom of a cdr you’ll see the bottoms are all sorts of different colors… some are gold some are green, some are blue, some are blue-green etc.

I prefer the silver cds just because it’s a professional cd, not some burn job with crappy ink jet printer inserts for booklets and tray liners, that I could do myself. Quality sir, quality.

as far as my favorite boots…
BURNING INSIDE THROUGH THE YEARS, '89-'92
SUN FIX
OVERFLOW
REMIXES AND B-SIDES
NEW REVELATION
SPHINCTOUR 1996 (probably my favorite of the boots)

So yeah, there ya go. Some of these little fuckers were hard as shit to track down.
good luck on the overflow CD that little bastard took me about 3-4 years to find from the time I had started collecting and I haven’t seen it offered since I got mine.

There are only 500 of the “sphinctour 1996” boot (I lucked out and found three of them within days of each other… granted I was hunting around on Germany’s ebay but I haven’t seen any since.) btw many times music stores on line will list the normal sphinctour album as sphinctour 1996. don’t be fooled, the cover of the bootleg looks like the “tapes of wrath” dvd cover only black and gold and the publisher of the boot is GAE (golden audience edition) anything else is the normal sphinctour release

The “remixes and B sides” is an excellent boot as well, it’s the Black box but condensed to 1 cd. that one can be tricky to find but for the most part it comes and goes in floods. some times I find it all the time other times I go long stretches without seeing it.

you know, now that i think about it I haven’t seen the sun fix available for sale in some time either.

the others should be pretty cake to track down.

for the most part I uploaded a ton of pics to discogs so you can seewha the boot covers look like [url http://www.discogs.com/artist/Ministry#t=Unofficial_All&q=&p=1] here

We get it Richie, you’re the only true Ministry fan on this board and none of us will ever be as cool as you. Move along now…

Dare I pimp my 2003 recording? Well, it’s not audio, but I do have the CDR/audio counterpart…

Is it video? guess I didn’t read it right, but if it’s video I think everyone here would be interested!

I filmed it, but it hasn’t been transferred up to current standards since 2003. The audio isn’t bad. The CDR counterpart is great, too. I’ll keep it posted when I get it.

I don’t even really understand this post, but it made me laugh.

To answer the original question, my favorites would be geared towards the early years by far, so to keep it spread out, I’ll limit it to one or two from each tour:

5/18/82 Chicago - The second earliest show known to be out there. It’s short, but has great quality sound.

7/10/82 Detroit - The definitive boot from the early days. Great quality and a heap of tracks that never gotreleased. This is the one that got me into collecting bootlegs way back when.

7/20/83 Minneapolis DVD - Only recommended if you can score the upgraded version that surfaced a few years ago. There are multiple versions of this out there that are absolute crap. Not as good sound quality or performance as the early recordings, but it’s the only full gig out there from the WS tour, oddly enough.

10/24/84 Minneapolis - This is the best quality boot from the post-WS Wax Trax days. Poor sound quality but better than any of the others out there from this period. Has reworkings of a few older tracks and a couple unreleased tracks.

4/10/86 Toronto - I unearthed the definitive, pre-broadcast version of thi a few years ago. Beautiful soundboard professional recording of an early date of the Twitch tour.

6/6/86 Chicago - Not quite as pristine-sounding as the Toronto date, but still great-sounding. This one has several unreleased songs as well.

5/1/87 Houston DVD - The only boot from this tour. Pretty rough, but worth it for the songs that were never performed live again.

12/16/88 New York - Commercially released as “House Of Bones”. This is a nice soundboard recording of the Land tour. It would be the definitive boot from the tour, if it weren’t incomplete.

10/31/88 San Francisco - There are quite a few similar-quality boots from this tour (12/11/88, 12/20/88, etc). I’d pick San Francisco over the others becaused of the unique setlist (with Lard).

2/13/90 Omaha - The most-bootleged Ministry show. If you have a silver boot, it’s probably got this show on it. It’s a nice, soundboard show from this tour, though ofthen incomplete.

12/31/89 Chicago and 2/22/90 Merriville - Not as good sound quality, but both have terrific setlists.

9/4/92 New Orleans or 9/12/92 Irvine - The best sounding 2 shows I’ve been able to turn up from Lolla. Frankly, most recordings from this tour sound like crap. These 2 are a bit better, but nothing stellar.

12/27/92 Los Angeles - There are several good recordings from this tour, but this one’s probably the best and the easiest to find.

10/1/94 and 10/2/94 Mountainview - These are the 2 accoustic sets for the Bridge School Benefit. Decent sound and very different.

6/14/96 Hultsfred and 7/5/96 Kristiansand - Noth really nice sounding shows from the Filth Pig tour. There are several other good ones, and of course the official live album, so you have a lot to pick from here.

8/27/99 Dallas - The best recording from the Dark Side tour. There are a couple others that come close, but overall there aren’t many good recordings from this tour.

4/18/03 Dallas and 4/30/03 Niagra - Both pretty good. Really the fans stepped up and booted the crap out of this tour, so there are many others to pick from.

10/20/04 New York - There’s a soundboard version of this out there recorded for XM. There were several other decent audience versions of shows as well that have a little better feel to them because you can hear the crowd better, but I usually go for soundboard if there out there.

7/7/06 Atlanta DVD - Perfect quality, great shot. Sadly the weaker material makes this and everything after it not worth watching.

And if you’re looking for a recommendation on the 2008 tour, I won’t be much help. Sorry.

Hope these help.

Bisquito can you throw up the jpgs for the dark side of live, live at waldrock and an evening with ministry? Still can’t find those damn boots!
Late,
grmpysmrf

Of those 3, I only have Dark Side Of Live. I may be able to get some time to put them up this weekend.

I love bootlegs, at the store, there were a handful of famous artists who would come in and peruse the standard and then ask for the not so. phil collins comes to mind.
