Alright folks I had a wonderful time last night on my date with my new boyfriend/girlfriend to FIX and I got some pictures with Barker that I will post up soon…
My reaction to the film:
I thought it was mostly just an amusing montage of different scenarios and definitely gave a clearer picture of just how fucked up and crazy a person Al actually was, and the chaos surrounding a Ministry tour. It gave very little insight into Ministry as a band, historically or otherwise. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. I think it was more just to kind of capture the insanity of the Sphinctour, capture the moment. And yes as someone said it felt as though they danced around one of the core issues, which was the disappointing reaction to ‘Filth Pig’ as the follow up to ‘Psalm 69’. I was surprised to see that Al and Paul did not seem to totally hate each other at that point! The cinematography I thought was very well done and it was definitely a beautiful and fucked up film. I enjoyed it!
Q&A w/Paul Barker:
I don’t think the Q&A was particularly insightful, as Barker tends to give answers that kind of start by answering the question and then trail off into other unrelated tangents. The information of note that I remember is:
-
His favorite Ministry record is ‘Filth Pig’ and he feels the most “complete” or “fully realized” is ‘Dark Side of the Spoon’.
-
I asked: Tell us about the making of ‘Dark Side of the Spoon’. Is it true you wrote most of the album, because Al was totally fucked up?
He said something like “Well that kind of the case with all the albums…” which everyone laughed, and then he said they used a lot of tape manipulations on that album. They worked really hard on that album and it was tedious. They tried a lot of things that didn’t work to eventually arrive at the sound. He said each album has its own personality. Like they tried to not only have a signature sound for Ministry, but also for each album, and I think what he meant is that they did the best job of that for ‘Dark Side of the Spoon’…
-
Someone asked about his reaction to Ministry touring again and he said “I don’t know anything about that”
-
They asked if Al is really the crazy person in the film, was he hard to work with etc. and he said something to the effect of “yes Al is a character” and he referred to a specific quote in the movie where someone said Al causes a wide array of emotions in people, but it was unclear if Barker was talking about Al in particular, or life itself, or the music or whatever…
-
They asked “Why did you leave Ministry?” and he said he was “sick of the knuckleheadery”
-
They asked if Barker, having worked closely with Al, was offended about the disparaging commentary from Trent Reznor, Maynard Keenan, Jonathan Davis etc. toward Al and how did he feel about that? to which he said something to the effect of “I don’t think it’s disparaging they just are saying that they can relate to him because they were there (addicts) as well, and they understand that mindset”
-
Someone called the director out about “Was this a film about addiction, or a film about Ministry?” and I think he didn’t know what to say. The crux of the issue is obviously that addiction was the “twist” used to market the film and because an overriding theme but really its just a snapshot of the tour and “look how crazy it was!!”, and more of a film about the legendary Al Jourgensen himself than Ministry the band.
-
Someone asked Paul what he’s doing now and he said “business, effects pedals/synths, family” he didn’t promote Flowering Blight or any other musical project so we know he probably doesn’t have anything coming down the pike musically…
That’s all I remember from the Q&A. Most of the questions were pretty generic…
My personal Q&A w/Paul Barker:
(First off let me say I think he’s an outstanding guy!!)
Me: “‘Filth Pig’, ‘Dark Side of the Spoon’ and ‘Animositisomina’ are my favorite Ministry I love that “latter day era” before you left. People refer to those as the “Barker years” because it sounds like you had more of a hand in the writing…”
Paul: "Well, if you want to hear MY personal sound check out Flowering Blight but I think those records were as “50/50 as anything else” (it’s kind of hard to say who did what in Ministry was the gist…)
[this is paraphrasing because he REALLY does not answer questions in a direct manner!]
Me: “I fucking love Pink Anvil ‘Halloween Party’!! It really influenced me!!”
Paul: (grin) “Oh that’s a badass record…”
Me: “And I heard ‘New Years Eve Party’ from Max Brody I’m the only one who has it! Can I share it with Prongs?? Or are you going to press it officially and sell it?!?”
Paul: (genuinely perplexed) “Well what did Max say?”
Me: “I asked him if I could share it and got no response. I don’t wanna share it if you’re gonna sell it”
Paul: (trully perplexed) “Hmm well there isn’t really money to be made with Pink Anvil…so uhh I guess you have my blessing”
Me: “JLW said I’m supposed to ask if we can interview you for prongs??”
Paul: “Yes go through Afra”
[But later I scored some contact info from him so I will be the one to contact him directly for the Prongs interview because through Afra will take too long. I will make a thread about this and also Pink Anvil ‘New Years Eve Party’ soon.]
And no I did not ask about Gerda because he was so fucking nice and genuine and I did not want to annoy him, but honestly i cannot picture those two together, or she is just taking us all for a ride with her posts!! This was the greatest mystery of my entire night, to be honest.
Gerda, you are the 8th wonder of the world!!!
