Other than Hotrod, a great set. Not that Hotrod is a bad tune, it certainly isn’t but Al can’t sing it, never could, and lip syncing is worse that doing it badly.
Wish the tour would have made it my way even though I’ve already seen Slayer twice on the “final” tour. I like the support bands on this leg, Primus, Ministry and Phil so much more than the barky dog death metal bands previously opening.
Slayer added Stain of Mind which is one of my favorite Slayer tunes unfortunately at the apparent expense of Gemini, also a great tune.
Glad you had a good time.
Even Hotrod sounded great…I didn’t even care about the lip-syching really…the band and the crowd were having so much fun it didn’t seem to matter…can’t say enough about how good Al looked and sounded and how great the Asheville crowd was…I gotta fly up here more often for shows…
Yeah and this nice eclectic line-up was way preferable to watching Slayer with a bunch of Butt Rock bands opening up…Slayer were just fucking relentless for 2 hours…
This is nice to hear. Looking forward to it.
I notice “So What” seems to have been abandoned. Happened at the solo date on November 1, too…
Yeah no So What last night…I was kinda glad…was great to hear Burning Inside…they turned it out…
I’m cool with burning inside instead of so what. While I love So What I’ve heard it live So many times that I could go with out hearing in concert for a while
Yeah that was my feeling too…I dig So What but this was a nice change…
We were on the floor so there was no sitting down…not to mention the little vicious splinter group mosh pits busting out at random places all night …
Can’t relate to leaving during Slayer but glad you had fun while you were there…Slayer weren’t my favorite of the bands on the bill but their set kicked the shit out of every other bands by a long shot …it was their night…
I’ve only seen Slayer once before – a few years ago, during this interminable final trek – but they made me regret not seeing them at every single one of their stops in the NY area. A great stage show, unstoppable energy, awesome pyro, and the songs keep coming without any kind of break – just an intense, constant assault on the senses. Hoping they bring it to MSG this Saturday.
P.S. Any Primus fans out there: Did the band play all of Professor Nutbutter, or just a tease? That song is the Live Holy Grail for Primus fans…
You pretty much described Slayers set perfectly… And I’m pretty sure they will bring the same energy when you see them…
And yes Primus played Nutbutter…their set was as fun and quirky as usual and Les Claypool had the funniest line of the night…he said “Is it just me or does listening to Ministry make your sperm count rise?” …everyone was laughing their asses off at that one…
Phil and his band were also very good and very well received…worth it to get there early for their set…
Primus also did a killer Rush interlude as they are prone to do…
In my 28 years of seeing Ministry live I’ve NNEVER seen them skip “So What”, but I totally get it and it makes sense. They had what? A 35 minute set? “So What” would’ve been 1/3 of it, haha! They needed this setlist to be precise, deliberate, and brutal. It was a tactical hit to fire a shot into the guts of a jaded market that has all but forgot their existence. I suspect it was effective and I hope the energy spills over properly when we get some more mid-size club / theatre shows instead of this megalomart Arena shit.
I’ll tell you what man, Ministry was wayyyyy more well received than I had feared they would be…now that may change at other venues but this crowd was really receptive to Al & company…
The arena in Asheville only holds 7K people so it didn’t feel like a big ugly gross arena show…it was an I intimate arena show,if such a thing is possible…and it had the feel of an old school metal show…it had that good late 80s/early 90s vibe…it didn’t feel like a big Butt Rock extravaganza…took me back to better times.
Right on. That sounds pretty rad, actually.
The show in LA is at the FORUM . . . which is definitely a big ugly gross arena show, hahaha.
Yeah that one will probably be a very different experience…are you going?
That’s what it looked like when I saw the Sphinctour in '96.
Nah. It’s just not good timing for the ones around me, so I’m not gonna go through all the bullshit. I guess there’s still a chance I might get a wild hair up my butt and jump on one at the last second, but I ain’t planning for it.
Mostly I’m stoked for King Diamond next month…
I wish that King Diamond tour was coming my way…should be great…
