Ministry L.A. show

Bastards. No Prongers 'cept me in Montreal.

Looks like you all had a good time though.

I live a couple hours outside of Montreal, and saw Ministry there in 2008.

Just like some fucker at a dead end job Al feels like he can’t do anything else and make a living off of it.

I’m only guessing, since I’m no longer close to him (I am friends with people who are) but I believe this is an astute observation.

Al never really seemed to have any talents other than being the frontman of a band of his own design. Even simple tasks like operating a washing machine or making a sandwich appeared to be beyond his comprehension sometimes. So what happens when you arrive at the age when being rockstar is no longer feasable. I dunno.

Seems like smoke and mirrors at this point, which is fine if you’re OK with it…but I really doubt that he is.

I think he genuinely wanted to retire, but probably discovered that he couldn’t live off of whatever he’d saved (particularly with the medical bills he must’ve incurred from his hospital stay) and that’s why he has to keep resurrecting Ministry.

Sorta like Homer Simpson and computer hacking?

Or worse?

But if Al doesn’t enjoy playing the Bush Trilogy and Relapse tracks, why doesn’t he just give the fans what they want and make the setlist mostly '80s/'90s Ministry? Does he have to play that era in moderation because of royalties owed to Paul/Chris/etc.?

good point but its probably sire/warner or i dunno

Nah, it’s just that he hates playing older stuff more than he hates playing newer stuff. That’s just Al. I’m a little surprised he’s still playing songs from Houses of the Mole, frankly.

As least Homer gives it a shot instead of flimflamming others into doing it for him. In your example anyway.

There’s no money in the older stuff. I just see it as advertising (I’m just spittballing here) If he plays the stuff the fans want then they maybe they run out and buy a used copy (because they are not making anymore new CDs of older stuff) of whatever album the old song was on and he doesn’t see a dime. If he plays the new stuff maybe the fans run out and buy a new CD from his label and he sees a couple bucks. granted I think he’d make a lot more money in ticket sales and merch if he played older shit but it is what it is.

i disagree, as i bet there is a significant amount of money being left on the table due to whatever the reasoning behind not playing anything weird is.

i said this somewhere else, so if people are re reading this i apologize, but all that separates al from hundreds of my dollars is 6-10 minutes of his time, i would settle for two weird ass songs. I would buy 2 tix. I would buy 2 shirts/ merch. I would attend more than one show. i know many people who would do this.

that is what really boggles my mind. assuming this is all for money, then why not maximize your fucking target demo? ffs, i know of 5 or 6 people off the top of my head that would do the same. i want to give al my money, but he (or SOMEONE, whoever) does not want to put forth the MINIMAL effort to get it. the effort being playing some songs that he hasn’t played many times before, but are from the backcatalouge, not the "bushlapse quadrilogy). i’m not even saying SPECIFIC tracks, i’m just saying something weird. I miss seeing him perform lard songs. i miss hearing about a show where some pailhead was played or something. he could get away with miming PTP and shit like that, and i would still go.

what the fuck IS IT with that organization?

SKB and 404 kick ass.

If the show was like a month earlier and I felt like telling obligations to eat a dick, I’d’ve been there, too. Every time there’s a concert or a RETROSPECTACLE ( [pirate] ) I wanna go to, someone either drops dead or I gotta handle biz.

this is a good point… saw alice cooper in november of 2011, he had new album out but he played one song off it, the rest was kinda balanced setlist of songs going back far to 1972 (!) to 2004. people were happy as shit to hear “mr niceguy” and “poison” and “eighteen” obviously, more diehard fans were raving about him playing “clones” and “halo of flies”… win-win show and it was great.

same thing i saw ozzy do as well, new album out (“scream” was it i think) and they played only that song off it. the rest were just like best of live, some popular sabbath songs and ozzy solo stuff back to 1982.

ACDC does that too.

it would seem so.

i really wonder what al’s reply would be if someone asked him pointblank why he doesn’t play old music? i wonder if it would be a simple “cause i don’t want to” or if he has some complex reasoning behind it.

someone from prongs should do an Al interview.

we’re probably the only people who will give it to him straight.

I don’t think there’s one ounce of business strategy to Al’s decisions regarding the setlists. I’m going to give him LESS credit and say this is just a matter of path-of-least-resistance. He’s drunk and lazy. Learning (this includes RE-learning) a song you never played live (or haven’t done in a long time) or one that you’ve done at every show for the past 8 years . . .

He can sing these songs in his sleep (sort of) and if you look at the Denver vids, that’s just what he needs. He used to be all about taking chances and doing things the hard way . . . Screw that! Now he’s like 60 or whatever and he doesn’t want to have to work hard at something. If he could afford one of those 2-Pac type holograms of himself . . . We’d see it. Heck, RamCo’s 2008 Impostour had even LESS.

Anyone who thinks these decisions by Al are part of some calculated masterplan . . . I think you’re overthinking it, Sorry.

Heck, I’d even be happy if they’d play songs from Mole, RGB, and TLS that WEREN’T played on the last three tours but that aint happening either? Is it a coincidence that there were more songs from each of the Bush discs than there were from the new album? I mean, it’s one of the top 50 rock albums of all time, for crying out loud! Seems we got a little shortchanged if that’s true.

Al’s a lazy bastard who doesn’t like his job (thank you grumpy) and doesn’t particularly give a crap about his fans either.

This has a lot of merit too.

I saw Alice Cooper two nights ago and he played zero songs from his new album.

If Al was smart he’d take advantage of the Droid Hologram feature like 2pac. Just because 2pac can’t be stopped, even after being shot by the Biggie Smalls hologram.
