Several of you may have seen some papers/notebooks from the Mind sessions that were “recovered” from Chicago Trax back in 89 and listed on a popular auction site recently. Naturally, they have made their way to me.
After running through the contents, verifying their lineage and and even comparing them with some of the notes in Connelly’s book, I’m pleased to say they are definitely authentic. Not only that, they give a ton of info.
The total contents were 25 loose pages with various writing on them and a jr. high-style notebook with one page front and back filled out, the rest blank. Most of the loose pages are either on notebook paper or on the backs of Chicago Trax forms. The writings vary from lyrics to songs (songs from Mind, early versions of the same, and a couple songs that never saw the light of day) to listings of which sounds correspond to which tracks on the mixing board to random notes with no real significance. Many are in different handwriting, so they are obviously from multiple writers.
As for the officially released songs, the three making an appearance are Thieves, Breathe and Cannibal Song. There are a couple bits missing from Thieves and a couple minor changes in the others, but for the most part, we’ve got the official lyrics for all three. I went ahead and changed them on the Mind Lyrics page. There were some pretty major changes in all three.
And here are some scans. I’m working on getting them all online. I’ll post more shortly.
Here’s the Cannibal Song lyric sheet. The order is a little off, but it’s all there:
And a list of all the specific mixing tracks for Cannibal Song. Sorry forthe sideways scan, but it fits in the thread much better this way:
And on the back of the list of tracks, we have this perplexing sentiment along with a note presumably referring to the Hellraiser samples in the song.
And another listing of the Cannibal Song tracks.
Next: The evolution of Breathe.
