labels own the master recordings of what they’ve paid for. that doesn’t mean a band can’t re-record those same songs somewhere else. the rights to the underlying compositions, words and music ,stay with the writers unless they sell their rights. i guess that’s how michael jackson was able to acquire. somebody in the beatles camp wanted to cash out. that was a while ago. i don’t remember the circumstances.in a nutshell, that’s it.label owns the recordings of your efforts. you can exploit those efforts elsewhere (usually with some restrictions that you’ve agreed to).
