Media Shelves

So I was sick of my wife’s and my sloppy looking cd racks.

I wanted to build some media shelves, but I’ve never really made ANYTHING that looked nice or even worked, really. Well, one or the other, it would either look nice and not work or work and not look nice So I was hesitant to try and build some shelves for our cds and movies.

so my father in law is an engineer by trade so I told him of my plan and he helped me a little bit. showed me how to use the drill press I bought and showed me how to use wood stain.

and it came out damn good, I think

So I thought I would share my efforts with the board. I’m gonna start some book shelves next along with another media shelf because all of our dvds don’t fit in that corner.

Nice! Looks good man, post pics when you get the other shelves done. Always thought it would be cool to make your own furniture. One of my buddies’ brother makes fancy wood art deco coffee tables for exorbitant prices. Good on you!

All my cds have been ripped to mp3 and are in storage bins in the basement except some rare ones and ones with crazy handmade packaging.

The vinyl lives on some good ol’ cinderblock shelves. I used to just have a bunch of the cheap standard vertical bookshelves with vinyl on the bottom shelf and books up top, but they weren’t very sturdy and made the room claustrophobic, and I couldn’t find any horizontal shelves to buy that had enough room between shelves and/or were deep enough for the vinyl until I looked into the cinderblock option. Really wanted to go the route you did, but didn’t have convenient access to power tools.

So the tall shelves went to live in the spare room with books on 'em, and the cinderblock shelves have all the vinyl and are covered with houseplants on top (with trays to catch overflow of course). Added bonus, audio cassettes fit real nicely in the holes in the blocks. Ugly, but gets the job done.

I only listen to my CD’s in my car. So I have a bunch of those stupid zip up CD folder pouch thingies. There’s no rhyme or reason to any of it.

Looks good man, those other CD racks looked really tacky and dated, straight outta 1999 or so…

I move around a lot and I got tired of hauling CD’s around so I just stuck them all in a big folio. I suppose if I had a permanent residence I’d do what you are doing and put them on display, but I guess I don’t have the jewel cases anymore.

You should start collecting vinyl though man, so much more elegant plus the big ass album art without all the plasticy jewel cases that get scratched and go crunch!

thanks man. I’m very happy with it. I certainly will post pics of the newer book shelves when they get done. I already bought the wood.

certainly very gratifying when it turns out the way you envisioned it.

ours too but we still keep our cds out… as you can see.

that’s kinda why i’m gonna build the bookshelves.(that and we need it because the shitty target shelf we have now leans) they are going to be 12 inches deep so we can store our vinyl in them.

Really wanted to go the route you did, but didn’t have convenient access to power tools.

I used a wood saw to cut all the wood the only power tools I used was the drill press to make the slots for the hardware to hold the shelves. but you can get a cheap version for 12 bucks that attaches to a normal drill.

oooh I stay away from those. I’ve dubbed them “the steal me folders.” sucks to give thieves the opportunity to steal your whole collection with a swipe and a sprint.

thanks man. I’m really glad others like it too. Normally I don’t care what others think but I’m stoked others can appreciate this.

I do, it’s just stored in a different part of the house. and my jewel cases are all in pristine condition but I know what you mean, some are only that way because they are on their 3rd jewel case.

Nothing like a bit of DIY.

It’s much better now. I couldn’t imagine looking at those old wobbly shelves after a drink binge. It would be puke stations.

Requesting a blueprint and easy-to-follow IKEA style instructions over here, I really like what I’m seeing. Approximately how many CDs does that hold?

Just moved out and sadly had to toss the storage unit I had from Best Buy (the generic 500+ cheap plywood one they offered) and now all my collection is sitting in dusty storage.

What a compliment! Thanks man! If your serious I’ll see what I can do.

Well, they’re 2 different sizes because I built it specifically for that corner. But the bigger one (the one that has some vinyl and box sets sitting on it) holds about 850 give or take. The littler one (and its not that much smaller) can probably hold about 650 to 700, Assuming I pull the bluray and dvds out but not gonna do that till I get the others shelves done.

That blows, man. Id hate for my babies to end up in a dirty garage. Let me know if you’re really serious about wanting directions.
