i think somebody thought it witty to come up with the hockey mom thing and they just ran with it… and the people the joke was to appeal to, the soccer mom kind, well it went over their heads and now they all went and bought their kids sticks and skates…
Unfortunately if Mccain and Palin are elected Hockey will probably get a huge republican boost which will piss Al off some more bring Ministry out of retirement, and we’ll get the aural equivalent of Episodes One Two and Three.
I underestimated McCain. He is a smart man by picking her. He will rally up lots of brownie points from Middle America if she keeps on saying what she says. People here, for the most part, want someone they can identify with, and certainly more people will identify with Palin than Biden/Obama. For example:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7611625.stm
I wouldn’t be surprised of McCain wins - I almost certainly expect it to be honest. We, as McCain says, “latte sipping” people may be on a different level but the truth is, this country is filled with people who align themselves with religion and high morals before anything else. While this talk of God sickens me, it occurs because the Republicans know who their audience is and cater well to them. Them being the majority of voting Americans. Whether you like it or not, they do it better than the democrats.
To be honest, I don’t know if Obama is that good either. He contradicts himself a lot too. I mean honestly, they’re all politicians and it sucks we have to choose the lesser of the two evils. Why two? This two party system in this huge country is silly.
I’m going independent in this election. These independents are getting a lot more votes, and this could mean something in 10-20 years from now.
I lost my respect for the democratic party when they stuck their lawyers on Nader and tried to stop him from running, by intimidating, abusing and trying to bankrupt him. Absolutely disgusting. But tough luck, Democrats, he’s on the ballot in 45 states:
http://www.votenader.org/blog/2008/09/09/breaking-news-nader-gonzalez-on-in-45-states/
I’ve been keeping an Eagle Eye on this and I don’t think I have heard Obama Contradict himself once… For Example?
I think to some extent you are right about people in the country with High morals and religiousness. However, I also think Palin may be a bit too Cuckoo for even the churchy crowd.

His pastor. He voted in favour of President Bush’s nomination of Condoleezza Rice as secretary of state (!!). He promised very strongly on NBC’s live broadcast in 2006 that he would complete his six-year Senate term and definitely not run for the presidency.
Also, Obama said he would support a filibuster of any bill with legal immunity for telecom companies that aided government wiretapping. But then, Obama supported a bill with immunity for those telecoms, and then claimed he did not change his position!
The list goes on and on. There is no difference…
afra, we currently are ruled by a two party system.
save your energies to change this for after november.
peace. and vote. (i’m just puzzled that this soon prior to the election, you’re going in the direction of nowhere–takes votes away from either party)
i could appreciate your vote for mccain, were you so inclined. i could appreciate your vote for obama, were you so inclined. but voting as an “independent” at this juncture in american history? i think you’re wrong.
(ok, NOW everybody get into a pickup and beat the crap outta me–i can take it.)
this crazy ass lady thinks that the war in iraq has to do with “god’s choice” or some bullshit like that. I give up, I really do.
I’m out. see you in sydney in 3 years.
this crazy ass lady thinks that the war in iraq has to do with “god’s choice” or some bullshit like that. I give up, I really do.
As have I. Hence, if democrats cannot beat this combo, they are truly weak and my vote is going to go elsewhere.
I’m out. see you in sydney in 3 years.
ha!
AFRA! (now i’m bowing down) come back!
you know me. you know i wouldn’t bs you, FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER.
man,get off this “indepedent” vote thing and make your first vote as a citiizen actually mean something.as opposed to making a statement for a third fourth or fifth party, nader connected or not–it’s meaningless.
you know i can be harsh, but dem’s the breaks–no pun intended.
your decision–which you know i will respect, but i gotta make my argument. c’mon.
Just because Obama’s gone down a few points in the polls doesn’t mean that the Didactic Duo are unbeatable. Us “latte sippers” need to man up a bit if we’re ever going to win anything.
Yes, Obama has done a little of the back-peddle over the years. Of course he has, he’s a politician and no viable for president politician hasn’t, it’s the nature of the game. He doesn’t shit gold and his past ain’t made solely of puppies and ginger bread. However, to imagine that 4 years of Obama is going to be the same as 4 years of McCain is just irresponsible. You really believe that? Really?!
You think that voting independent will bring a candidate more in line with your beliefs later on? Like all those who voted for Nader helped bring a change 4, no 8 no 12 no… (ad infinitum) years later?
Sorry to go off, I’m usually adverse to political rants, I just get tired of the “They’re all the same” speech. Clinton sure as hell wasn’t the same as Bush (baby or Sr.) and Obama sure as hell won’t be the same as McCain.
i’m now in the unofficial green death fan club.

MATT DAMON!!
YOU FUCKER. You beat me to it.
[reply]I’ve been keeping an Eagle Eye on this and I don’t think I have heard Obama Contradict himself once… For Example?
His pastor.
what about his pastor? If I remember correctly he gave his pastor several chances to correct himself and and rev. wright never did… can’t blame him for setting him out at the curb, I wouldn’t call that a back peddle.
He voted in favour of President Bush’s nomination of Condoleezza Rice as secretary of state (!!).
I wasn’t aware that he was ever anti-Condi before she was confirmed… Did he say he wasn’t going to vote to confirm her…
He promised very strongly on NBC’s live broadcast in 2006 that he would complete his six-year Senate term and definitely not run for the presidency.
Ok, I’m not giving him a pass on this BUT nobody ever answers that question honestly. Look at Hillary. We couldn’t get that woman to admit she was running and then we couldn’t get her to stop running. I don’t know why they can’t just say, “maybe.” But I guess they can’t.
Also, Obama said he would support a filibuster of any bill with legal immunity for telecom companies that aided government wiretapping. But then, Obama supported a bill with immunity for those telecoms, and then claimed he did not change his position!
You sir are correct and I’m ashamed I forgot about that one. I think your first points are a little weak BUT you definitely are correct about the wire tapping and that certainly is a big flip on Obama’s part. I hope that he had a good reason (although i can’t think of one)for switching.
The list goes on and on. There is no difference…
aside from the telecoms flip, there are worse things he could have flipped on and while they do reflect negatively on his character I think for the most part those things are petty (not counting the telecoms, cause that really is huge) and don’t really effect me(Or the country), But ok.
I’m not gonna slam you with a speech, “you should vote for obama” like ed does (with good reason mind you) But i really think you should weigh Obama’s “contradictions” versus how important the subjects of those “contradictions” were/are.
McCain and Obama are not the same and I’m sure you know that.
I understand your rational. I would rather vote for something I WANT and not get it rather than vote for something I DON’T WANT and get it. fortunately for me I want Obama.
No matter what ya’ vote congrats on just having a vote!

I am not a big fan of political rant either but you must understand that everywhere I go in this city of Chicago and every other online place I visit, there are huge pro-Obama threads. Okay, cool, fine. But the problem is they are painting him as this savior in shining armor. That he’s going to come and suddenly, almost instantly, the world will like us and the economy will boost right up and the gas will be back to decent prices. He is still a politician and if he makes any real “change”, still has to be seen. I mean you, green death, know this, but no-one around me really does.
Also depends who you ask if Clinton was the same or not. While he’s better than Bush Jr., to me, he’s not that much better. Did you know Clinton put sanctions on a lot of countries causing poverty. In Iraq, for example, there were days of constant bombing from the air and a half a million babies died due to the sanctions imposed by the Clinton administration (to which they said “the price was right”). I know also he put heavy sanctions on Pakistan when they created the nuclear bomb, causing the country to go into bankruptcy. But it’s no secret that the republicans are better for those types of countries… Anyhow, from a purely selfish point of view, I have been taxed less under the Bush administration than under Clinton’s.
At the end of the day, it’s all run by the same lobbies, interest groups, etc. Any country is. You can get a President here that is totally anti-Zionist - think he can do anything about it? He won’t even speak against it whatsoever. That’s what I mean…
Besides, who I vote for doesn’t matter due to the electoral college - Chicago will get Obama no question. It’s people in the swing states that need to get out there and vote.
And I like my latte with soy. And vanilla.
Matt Damon: “I want to know if she thinks Dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago because, she’s going to have the nuclear codes”.
Brilliant!

You know, at first I thought Palin was a dumb idea because she’s such a lousy choice for President.
Then I realized that she’s hugely popular not because of her qualifications, but because she’s a pretty woman with 5 kids (one of whom has Down’s Syndrome, one that’s knocked up, and one that’s in the army), she hunts, she has a career - she’s Mrs. Everywoman. So suddenly people are excited about McCain/Palin for all the wrong reasons.
My only hope is that Biden makes her look like an imbecile in the debates. Even then, they’ll probably just call him sexist.
afra, we currently are ruled by a two party system.
To quote the Simpsons from the Treehouse of Horror VII:
Homer: America, take a good look at your beloved candidates. They’re nothing but hideous space reptiles.
Kodos: It’s true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about it? It’s a two-party system; you have to vote for one of us.
Man1: He’s right, this is a two-party system.
Man2: Well, I believe I’ll vote for a third-party candidate.
Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.
Classic.
That being said, our (Canadian) election is coming up in a month or so… and we have 5 parties!
i believe everybody here thinks. thinks about how the hell we’ll pay our bills, how will our kids be educated. i’m just freaking out because of all this republican ranting and chanting, “drill baby drill” and “palin, palin, palin”.
kinda like nazi germany. my parents went through that. i don’t wanna relive history. i think we can do better. and yes, they are all politicians, but they’re there (ideally) to make things better. uh, somebody get W on the line so’s i can rant at that idiot.
if some great music doesn’t come outta this–i WILL poison myself. (or go back to drinking)
