My thoughts? This guy Tyler knows what he’s doing. The production is much improved from the last few efforts. The guitar sounds great and I’m glad Twiggy is back on bass.
The content, however, the lyrics, the title of the song, and the song structure, are lacking. Lazy bridge and repetitive lyrics about being a drunk. Time for rehab…
This bluesy, “swampy” gothic musical direction makes total sense for him at this point, but I wish he would have something new to say. Instead I just hear more pain. Endless pain 4 albums of fucking pain!
And who but an alcoholic can relate to this subject matter?
The drum/breath thing reminds me a bit of Time of the Season by The Zombies. Not bad. Everything since Golden Age of the Grotesque has been shite, i’ll be interested to hear the album, hopefully it’s a step in the right direction. I was thinking about him recently, i used to absolutely love his stuff, but i just haven’t been able to enjoy his last few albums at all.
I say “enjoy”, i actually mean “listen to”, even though i downloaded them i felt ripped off and couldn’t make it to the end of them, can’t remember a single song or even the names of the albums at the moment, or even how many albums he’s had since GAOTG, is it 2, maybe 3?

I actually like it.
The dirty grit with the swankily depressive sex vibe kind of reminds me of the better part of that old Low Pop Suicide stuff we were talking about a while back . . .
low pop suicide? isn’t that band with Jeff Ward? i saw a ep of theirs in a box a million years ago but did not get it
Yep. Jeff Ward was in the band. I used to have the My Way EP, but didn’t get into it too much.
As for the new Manson, I don’t know. I think I finally figured out what I don’t like about some of his new stuff, and came up with a list.
It’s not fun anymore. When he started as Marilyn Manson and The Spooky Kids, there was comedy, fun and spoofing.
His “trilogy” of albums had good production, great songwriting and a lot of soul. The band seemed really passionate about what they were doing. Part of this can be credited to Reznor, who really helped the band find their footing.
Apart from Eat Me Drink Me and few select tracks on High End of Low, he has completely abandoned ballad type songs or anything that has any soul. It’s sort of my same complaint about Madonna. They would rather do these quirky teenie boppy songs with very little thought put into them. The high production, good songwriting and passion seems to have been sucked dry.
It’s not nostalgia speaking. Seriously. Listen to Mechanical Animals, then put on Born Villain. I’m all about change, but in Manson’s case, it’s not a good change.
Those damn repetitive lyrics. They started with the god awful Holy Wood singles (Disposable Teens, Fight Song) and then became standard in every damn thing to follow.
Kind of sad how fresh that still seems 13 years later.
Favorite quote:
“[Manson] was standing at my front door wearing those fake breasts he wore on the cover of Mechanical Animals,” retiree Judith Hahn said. “He said, ‘My name is Marilyn Manson, and I’m here to tear your little world apart.’ I thought he was collecting for the Kiwanis food drive, so I gave him some cans of pumpkin-pie filling.”
I bought a Low Pop Suicide CD once because it had Jeff Ward and Dave Ogilvie on it. “This is gonna be awesome!,” I thought.
I hated it and sold it back.
