If I’d have seen this show back in the day I’d probably have been a fan. I love when he jumps on Jon at the end. Jon just looks totally unprepared and doesn’t know how to react.
I don’t know if this is the best example of when Manson when they were a great band. Performances from the Dead to the World VHS (‘Antichrist Superstar’ era) are particularly strong.
I’d say anything up till the Guns, God and Government tour for ‘Holy Wood’ was when he started to lose it…even then still a great tour.
The real plunge in live performances and overall album quality I think began with ‘Golden Age of Grotesque’. We’ve been over this a million times though.
I’ve never really given a crap about him or his music, but caught some videos of his early stuff with Spooky Kids and such and his performances were really energetic and fun when he was still young and skinny and looked like a rockstar (and not just a self-important douche bag).
Not to sound elitist, but I never really considered Marilyn Manson that great, mainly because by the time they came around they just seemed like a more accessible, watered down “pop” version of what bands like Ministry and Skinny Puppy had been doing for years. To me Marilyn Manson was only “groundbreaking” insofar as he brought a certain aesthetic to the surface of the mainstream where others had failed. NIN too, but I think Trent was way more talented musically, with his background in classical piano.
But yeah, if I was a little bit younger and unaware of Ministry and Puppy, I too would have probably thought they were the greatest thing in the world.
