[reply][reply]Well, even as an atheist I can see there’s a difference between following said book literally and entirely and moderates that take to heart the basic message of the faith without adhering to shit clearly written to apply to people living thousands of years ago.
Why? I’m an atheist as well but I think if the book you live your life by says you should do something it doesn’t matter how utterly fucking ancient and barbaric it is. You say you’re a Muslim I’m going to start assuming you believe everything your fucking book preaches. Same with Christians and any other faith. This PC bullshit has gotten us nowhere.
Do we treat any other group this way? Someone says they’re a Nazi but doesn’t subscribe to the belief that the Aryan race is particularly better than others. So, Nazism isn’t that bad, right? Just a few bad apples.
Just look at how Christians still treat homosexuals in the U.S. It’s fucking barbaric bullshit and ridiculous reasoning. Look at how they rationalize “climate change” (assuming they even believe in it). Look at how long it took before women received equal rights (and that’s still debatable). Look at slavery and how the Christian god was used as a reason/excuse for it. There are so many terrible things religion has done but because some groups aren’t fully subscribed to their chosen god’s word we pretend the religion as a whole isn’t all that bad. It’s a cop-out.[/reply]
But a lot of Christians and Muslims don’t do everything their holy books tell them to do. A number of religious sects within explicitly say this. [/reply]
That’s really the point they’re making. If they really were “Christians” they would be following that shit to the letter. What you have now-a-days is a bastardized version of Christianity. People that pick and choose the “important” words of God, thus rendering God irrelevant in some capacity depending on which “faith” you follow. If God’s word is important then All of God’s words are important not just the ones you find convenient.
If some Christian is wearing a mix of wool and linen, you gonna say “YOU FUCKING HYPOCRITE! YOU’RE NOT FOLLOWING ALL OF YOUR FAITH’S RULES!”?
Most people wouldn’t give a shit unless it’s to point out how Christians aren’t obedient to their God, when it comes to something as simple as dressing themselves.
As for your other points, it’s not as cut and dried as “Christians hate gays/promoted slavery/justified things in God’s name” because it’s not as though secular humanism throughout Western Europe abolished slavery.
Secular Humanism Totally abolished Slavery. Religion was used as a way to keep slaves. Organized religion has been a bane on Society for eons!
We are just now seeing nations and cultures that are either agnostic or religious apathetic.
For instance?
Positing what women’s rights would be in a world sans religion is pointless speculation.
True to a point, It would also depend on what economic system was in place and what kind of values the society holds.
