Holy fuck that was an awesome movie! Easily my favorite action movie since Dredd.
saw it today at the Vista theater…a 40 min drive from my house but AWESOME theater…love the ancient Egyptian theme, massive amounts of leg room (seriously, they can fit 2 rows in front of you between rows) and $6 for afternoon movies? can’t beat it. this will be my go to place for new releases for sure.
as for the movie itself…mindblowing. Vanishing Point is one of my favorite movies of all time, an early 70’s film which is basically one non stop car chase across the desert the whole film. this was Vanishing Point on cocaine, steroids, and LSD. not to say the plot is the same, but you catch my drift. also reminded me of elements from the movie Speed at times. but really, it’s impossible to compare this movie to other films. it’s its own beast. one that will be very tough to be topped in the action genre.
this movie kicked all sorts of ass.
Prolly check it out on wednesday. Half day but also graduation and the traffic is too bad for me to commute home then commute back so i need to kill about 6 hours. Figured id take in this flick.
Does this flick follow the other two? I never saw thunderdome. Is it a remake of the first? Is it just another story using familiar characters and settings?

Yeah, it’s just another Mad Max story, it’s not clear where it fits in, and there’s no real effort to explain it at all in terms of the timeline. Apart from Max it’s all new characters. No dog this time either!
The blu ray is going to have a black and white version and a silent version (still with the score playing over it), according to George Miller.

GRUMPY: I think your question was more about whether the other films are needed in order to place and understand this one in context. No. It doesn’t at all rely on the others and is completely independent in terms of story. You don’t need to see the first Max movies to get this one. You do still need to see the other Mad Max movies, but that’s just because they’re awesom.
I just downloaded the soundtrack, done by Junkie XL. Not a Junkie XL fan, but this music is great.

That was my question gunnar. But i Just saw road warrior last night. I thought there were only 2 films, mad max and thunder dome. My buddy who is a movie junkie set me straight and had me watch road warrior last night. Great flick, way better than the first one. He also said thunderdome was garbage and no sense in seeing it. He also enjoyed the new release. So he was watching it with me last night and was chuckling at some apparent crossover nods in the new movie. I asked “what” but he said he said id know when i see the new one. Im looking forward to this.

He’s wrong.
But Thunderdome does get the most flack from the fanbase. It is still a really great film with great imagery and imagination. The biggest point of contention is the damn kids which are basically the Ewoks of the Mad Max universe. Don’t let some uppity prick dissuade you from seeing “Thunderdome”. People that say it sucks often say that only because they think it gives them some sort of street cred. Bullshit. It’s awesome.
I need to see the older ones…hadn’t watched them since I was a young kid. concerned that this one kicked so much ass and was so “modern” that I’d find the others to be a bit more tame in comparison…that’s not to say bad films at all,but I have to get back into that mentality of different pacings/effects etc while watching them.
Went and saw it again today. Such a great movie.

Yeah, I’m kind of in the same boat. I don’t even know if I’ve seen all three.

A quick TV guide style synopsis for you, because I have nothing better to do right now . . .
MAD MAX: The city is in chaos and overrun by a gang of nasty bikers. This is the film where Max Rockatansky becomes MAD Max after his family is killed (also setting the template for almost every future Mel Gibson movie to come). It is NOT a post-apocalyptic film. It is set DURING the collapse/decay of a society.
ROAD WARRIOR: AKA Mad Max 2, Max is now a gnarly ass warrior of the wasteland. The film is post-apocalypse and the residents of this realm are scavengers both good and bad, trying to scrape by and survive. The “good guys” are working an oil plant that is under siege from LORD HUMUNGUS (pretty much the coolest villain of all time). Max arrives as their only hope (yeah, it’s like that).
MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDERDOME
Auntie Entity (Tina Turner) and her awesome chainmail-clad chocotitties have created a new civilization which thrives on its dysfunctional functionality. BARTERTOWN is powered by methane energy, made possible by a super smart midget (Master) who rides atop a super dumb megastrong retard (Blaster). Yeah, that’s right, MASTERBLASTER, bitches!!! Max is tasked with going head to head with MasterBlaster in Thunderdome (the arena of death where disputes are settled).
So now I’ve seen 1 and 2. I liked 2 better than 1, but I’m a fan of the cyberpunk (although, there weren’t any computers and microchips in #2 so I don’t know if it counts as Cyberpunk) dirt, anarchy, hopelessness imagery that comes with #2. That whole colored hair and leather clothes along with odd ball machines is just way cool to me. after your quick synopsis I’m looking forward to Thunderdome now too. and I can’t wait for Wednesday. I’m looking forward to this new flick after reading all of the reviews you all have posted.
the road warrior (which is sequel to mad max) is a second film
the first one was not released in USA or something
when they released the sequel (road warrior), it became popular in USA as well and so they released the first mad max movie, and re-titled road warrior as mad max 2 in america
thanks for the reviews of the first 3 gunnar, sounds kick ass. def need to check it out
Didn’t Road Warrior come first? I saw that in the theatre around 1983 I guess. I don’t remember much about any of them other the sand and cars.
Mad Max released in 79…

This. I’m not sure I trust anyone who hates Thunderdome.
I’m not sure what “crossover” moments Grmpy’s friend is talking about in the new one though - there are some winking nods to the other films (the old lady pointing a shotgun at Joe just like the old lady that pointed a shotgun at Toecutter, the music box, Max’s car getting trashed) but nothing that shows any real sense of continuity.
I’m not sure what “crossover” moments Grmpy’s friend is talking about in the new one though
I think he just means the little winks and nods to the previous films. There are no particular connecting items that bring one story to another or to put it back specifically in the order of all four.
We know, of course, that it is after the first movie, but aside from that, there are plenty of theories/ arguments that could be made for slotting it wherever on the timeline.
Imma just buy the BluRay set of all three old movies, I’m so in love with this new one I can’t imagine the same guy not doing awesome work!
