Hated his solo work, but absolutely loved his work with Velvet Underground. A little shocked by this, yet not really. Either way, it’s a huge loss, musically speaking.
Was his swan song “Lulu”? That’s unfortunate.
I was never a big fan but the man is a huge part of R&R history and left quite a legacy…r.i.p Lou…
Blasting some VU now out of respect.
blaring ‘Lulu’ and crying like a baby…not…but for real, RIP Lou!
Friend of mine made the apt comparison that “Lulu” being his last album was like “Transformers” being Orson Welles’ last movie.

That would be even more apt if Welles’ second movie was “Lulus.”

Well, in a way it could be better that ‘Lulu’ was his last because it likely garnered more publicity and reactions (however negative they be) than another solo album would have…
I mean ‘Lulu’ really put him back on the map for a lot of people more than another solo album would’ve. I know I’d kind of forgotten about him before that one came along…
As much as I’ve made fun of Lou for Lulu I’m actually bummed out. Velvet Underground… fuck… and bash Lulu all you want (fuck knows I will and have like it deserved) but “Junior Dad” is a solid track. Just that one track - all 20+ minutes or whatever of it would’ve made a decent EP that wouldn’t be nearly as pretentious and understandably shat on as the end result was.
But what he did back then and what he did with Metallica (who I believe have been the musical equivalent of AIDS since they stopped doing drugs/drinking and tried to make “heavy” music again) are two very different animals. You know, those were different times!
This is sad. I hope his kids are ok.
Sad but True. Lou will be missed!
Fucking sucks.

Ooh. Nice. Took me a minute. Good one.

…why wouldn’t they be? Or, to be more clear, why would they be any less ok than any other kids whose 71 year old parent dies?
Am I missing something? Condolences and all but the dude was old…and he croaked…not really a shock.
It’s been over a year since I’ve wished him dead, so I’m pretty sure I’m off the hook for this one.
RIP Lou.
As others have noted, I wasn’t a huge fanboy either, but he certainly earned his throne amongst rock royalty. And there was definitely some amazing stuff in his Velvet Underground catalog.

Shit, i forgot about that. Maybe you cast the spell at the start of a new lunar cycle, so there was a delayed reaction because the magic was weaker than usual.
Great guy. Amazing artist. Quality work, of course like most he went to shit in the 80s, but the guy was one hell of an innovator.

Gotta say that took balls to put out on a major label 40 years ago…
keep reading how they claim him as the father of punk.
don’t think so.that goes to Iggy Pop all the way.

it DID take balls. Lou was very much so a killer musician, and i have been a life long fan.
that said, i dont think his work went to shit in the 80s. i LOVE ‘The Raven’ and i have even gone on record here at Prongs to say that i even enjoyed Lulu.

Nobody cares what you think.
