[reply]“Easy Rider” probably fits that same formula too, though I’ve not watched it in about 20 years. I don’t mind the theme song for “Midnight Cowboy”. I like Harry Nilsson, though that is NOT one of his best tracks.

Dunno if you Netflix, but there’s a fascinating doc on him that is on instant watch called Who Is Harry Nilsson? I actually got into his music via that doc, amazing singer and even better songwriter. I can’t believe I never got into him before, same for Warren Zevon.

Ironically the one track people know him for, he didn’t even write[/reply]

Warren Zevon is an unheralded genius…

I would also recommend the book on him called 'I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead"…he was a complex dude…

I love Warren Zevon. Absolutely brilliant songwriter and soulful genius.

I had heard “Werewolves of London” of course, but never paid attention to who it was. Then when I was at the height of GG Allin fandom, I realized that “Carmelita” was a Zevon cover. Then I saw him on Letterman doing “Lawyers, Guns, and Money” and I was sold. I started buying his stuff and really getting into it, though, right before he died, so that was a bit unsettling. But, man, what an inspiring dude. Knew damn well Death was coming fast for him and he just stared him down like a badass all up to the final breath.

I think I’ll have to check out that book. Thanks to whoever recommended it.

Yeah,I recommended the book…it is one of those that are told by the people who knew him best…it’s a fascinating read…the dude was definitely no choir boy…he could be an abusive drunk but he was also a sweetheart…the whole angel on one shoulder and devil on the other thing…you should check it out…

Lawyers guns and Money rules so hard…my friend has a ritual where everytime we walk in the bar that is the first song he plays on the jukebox…a real crowd pleaser…

My favorite Zevon songs (in case anyone cares) . . .

“Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner”
“Frank And Jesse James”
“Lawyers, Guns and Money”
“Werewolves of London”
“My Shit’s Fucked Up”
“Carmelita”

Also, the recording of him singing “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” will crush your soul with the weight of a two-ton heavy thing.

I could never pick favorites…I love all those you posted…but no best of Zevon list of mine would be complete without ‘Play it All Night Long’…the lyrics and structure of that song kill me…and the tone of the fucking guitar…forget it…

and ‘Think of Me’ always makes me think of when my dad died so it will always have a special place for me…

You can’t go wrong with any early Zevon stuff though…things took a turn around the ‘Sentimental Hygene’ record…but I still like it and there are some smatterings of greatness in material after that album was made…but the early stuff is untouchable…

fuck Liz Phair I gotta keep talking about Zevon…

I got one of his older records recently, never heard it but it was his first after Excitable Boy so it had a lot to live up to.

I heard this song and was floored. it has it all - great songwriting, great playing, great singing, and…a killer bridge:::

Hell Yes - Warren! I did read his bio a few months ago. Complex man indeed! OCD is a fucking bitch to have, and how he went through it sober, i have no idea…anyone see this? Sad, Sad, Sad…but it captures him perfectly…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7Mirkd3CT4&list=PLB365F6748BABB972

  1. Patch Adams

In the John Waters movie ‘Cecil B. Demented’ (which is honestly not a great piece of celluloid itself), one scene involves the protagonists shooting up a theater that is showing “Patch Adams: The Director’s Cut.” I lol’d…[/reply]

I know, right? And on a Liz Phair thread of all places! This was a righteous takeover if I ever saw one.

I don’t Netflix, but thanks for the heads-up on the doc. I’d be interested in checking that out. I honestly know nothing about the dude apart from his music, but I always like to know about the personalities behind the tunes.

That’s such an amazing album from start to finish.
It was the first one I bought, and I only knew “Werewolves” and “Lawyers” from it, but was sold completely on first listen.
