Like Black Holes In The Sky

I picked up this comp today of bands covering Syd Barrett, including Jesu, Jarboe and Intronaut. It’s bloody brilliant.

Kosmos - Vegetable Man
Kylesa - Interstellar Overdrive
Intronaut - Arnold Layne
Stinking Lizaveta - Matilda Mother
Jarboe - Late Night
Pentagram - Flaming
Giant Squid - Octopus
Yakuza - Lucifer Sam
Jesu - Chapter 24
Unearthly Trance - Long Gone
Dredg - Astronomy Domine
Circle - Rats
Zodiak - See Emily Play

Again, good shit.

Sounds interesting, will check it out. Never heard of most of those bands but I would like to hear Jesu do some Pink Floyd. ‘Lucifer Sam’ is a great song, what are Yakuza like?

Looks very interesting, where could I find this compilation?

i saw the comp in FYE the other day so i’m assuming every chain will probably have it… also they got a myspace page where you can listen to each of the songs

ahhh comedy… FYE… i remember, christ, the day I went in there years ago and asked where the Godflesh records were… “oh we don’t have godflesh, but we do have GodSMACK…”

yeah good times. now they stock this comp.

I expected Yakuza to be heavier, to be honest. They do a pretty straight reading that ends in some “chug-chug” hardcore.

The Jesu song isn’t as good as some of the others, I’m afraid, but that might be because I was never a huge fan of “Chapter 24” to begin with. The Intronaut cover of “Arnold Layne” is the disc’s highlight. (Kylesa’s bottom heavy take on “Interstellar Overdrive” is quite good, as well.)

Just streamed this from www.myspace.com/sydtribute

Have to say I was disappointed:

  1. I feel this comp would have benefited from having better bands. The emphasis on metal bands is a mistake. Some of the songs sound like demos for bands like Megadeth esp. Lucifer Sam (really disappointed with that)
  2. Its got a poor production quality. Some of it sounds too muffled, e.g. See Emily Play which is one of Pink Floyd’s best songs, the cover seems to suffer simply from poor production.
  3. Jesu were wasted on Chapter 24. This song should not have been selected I feel. Syd’s songs are not suited for a sound like Jesu but maybe with a bit of experimenting something could have been achieved, alas, not this time.

Tribute albums are always suspect, cant think of a good one. Though I did like White Zombie’s take on ‘Children of the Grave’ from the Nativity in Black album in the 90s
