I don’t see much discussion of this band on here. They opened for Radiohead and they’re pretty out-there and aggressive for stuff that might fit best into the “indie” niche (though that tag really doesn’t suit them…)
Their album ‘They Were Wrong so we Drowned’ is superb noise rock/post-punk with major experimental tendencies and some nods to oldschool Industrial (Einsturzende Neubauten). That one’s my favorite and I might appeal most to others on this board.
‘Drums Not Dead’ is alternately blissful and depressing, tribal and subdued/atmospheric. Really quite beautiful and probably their most well known and critically acclaimed.
Their two newer ones are a bit more straightforward but have some great tunes.
Anyway I saw them on Sunday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and I really enjoyed it. Good show. I like their ability to mix arty experimentation, good grooves and energetic performances. I recommend these guys.
The deluxe edition of their new album ‘Sisterworld’ comes with a bonus remix EP with the following lineup:
01 Scissor (Pink Dollaz, Lance Whitaker & Transformation Surprise)
02 No Barrier Fun (Duetonal aka Alan Vega of Suicide)
03 Here Comes All the People (Atlas Sound aka Bradford Cox)
04 Drip (Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead)
05 Scarecrows on a Killer Slant (Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio)
06 I Still Can See an Outside World (Boyd Rice of NON)
07 Proud Evolution (Thom Yorke 500qd Remix)
08 Drop Dead (Fol Chen)
09 The Overachievers (Devendra Banhart and the Grogs)
10 Goodnight Everything (Melvins)
11 Too Much, Too Much (Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti of Throbbing Gristle)
I gave them a try a few years ago and simply couldn’t stomach the vocals. There was something infuriatingly annoying about them, although I couldn’t really put my finger on what.
the first album reminded me of early post-punk goodness. the 2nd one was weirdo-musique concrete, the 3rd was studio manipulation of sounds. the 4th was the first one that i felt was a bit of a re-tread. I’ll check out the new one simply cuz their track record has been pretty good.
When I saw the album name ‘They were wrong and so we drowned’ I thought witches and then I checked it out… and it’s about witches. I was sort of disappointed, I don’t know why. The singer is off putting I’ll say that much. But I can’t judge properly from snippets.
That “Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack” song ends up in a lot of my yoga playlists. I like the Liars but not to the point I get their every release. Anyone hear the remix CD? I’m really curious about the NON and Carter Tutti remixes.
