going to NYC show. can’t wait, really really excited. pre-ordered their new album. comes with a shirt, a silk screen poster, a tour poster, buttons, stickers, and a nice pint glass all for only $45. that’s a steal.
It’s tough to pick a starting point for these guys, but they do have a couple of samplers you could check out:
Stone Circles: An LPD Anthology (1988)
Canta Mientras Puedas (1996)
Recommended studio releases (for starters, anyway):
Curse (1983)
The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse (1990)
The Maria Dimension (1991)
From Here You’ll Watch The World Go By (1995)
Hallway Of The Gods (1997) - highly recommended
Tough not to recommend their whole catalogue, but I’d say give Hallway a shot first, and see how it grabs you. Very psychedelic, layered organic and electronic instruments, some loops, Edward Ka-Spel’s mesmerizing voice…I think you’d dig it.
I like LPD on CD a whole lot but the two times I saw them live, I found the shows to be a little dull. Maybe if I liked jam bands better… Mind you, the live version of “Blacklist” blew the hell out of the recorded version.
I saw DVOA open for them and I was blown away by how dull DVOA (who I love on CD) were.
I’ve seen the Dots a handful of times, and have always enjoyed the shows. Yes Blacklist is the bomb live especially with Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus/Nettwerk session bassist) playing drums. Most of my albums of theirs consist of pre- Maria Dimension stuff, but I like just about anything they’ve done. Niels Van Hoorn is one great guy, and that electronic horn thing is probably the coolest instrument I’ve ever seen. I saw DVOA open as well, and liked it for what seemed a stripped down set of Mark and Niels jammming.
